South on Albany
Contemporary$$
One more reason to stay the night in beautiful, historical Berry.
South on Albany is a beloved stalwart of regional NSW dining. For the past 12 years, owners Sonia Greig and John Evans have showcased Shoalhaven produce over a three-course seasonal set menu at their small restaurant, just off Berry’s main drag.
The dining room is unfussy but comfortable, soundtracked by 70s funk music, the occasional passing car and the quiet conversation of weekend visitors. The team is passionate about their work, and you feel it in their carefully polished service, equally polished wine list and throughout the menu.
There’s a nourishing familiarity to each dish, from the slow-cooked lamb wrapped in brik pastry, with hummus, cherry tomato and thick-cut zucchini; to the pan-roasted snapper, its skin a deep golden crust.
To finish, dessert of zesty almond cake with jewels of just-charred mandarin, meringue and lime ice cream is a comforting celebration.
Good to know: The restaurant offers BYO wine on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
