Bar Lourinha
Spanish$$
Stalwart status won with terrific tapas.
If there’s a place that knows how to romance the solo diner, it’s Bar Lourinha. Seasoned staff who are more familial than friendly, single serves of tapas, and close seating turn up the warmth. A negroni Iberico or sherry helps. But every table – from theatre-goers to mid-week lunchers – is here for its easygoing Iberian charm.
Peppery, flame-licked beef brisket skewers with a nutty romesco sauce lay the groundwork for an excellent evening, as do pig’s head tostadas, and golden corn croquettes with smoked chilli. Juicy roasted prawns, served whole, seem built for dunking into a sunshine-yellow turmeric butter.
Rice stew featuring spiced blood sausage, tender shredded pork and bitter chunks of endive is restorative and rustic. Crema Catalana spiked with pomegranate molasses shows this beloved spot – its walls brimming with trinkets – still has bucketloads to give.
Best for: Intimate and vibey, it’s perfect for date night or solo dining.
