7.15am I start with a tsai tou vounou (tea of the mountain.) Then it’s a grapefruit, berry, banana and Greek yoghurt smoothie, boiled eggs from my parents’ farm, avocado, and sourdough bread my mother makes with fennel, aniseed, mastic, mahlepi and black and white sesame seeds.

9.30am Black coffee from my stove-top cafeteria with two ice cubes.

11.10am I drop into work to check on the desserts for tonight. I eat some cooking chocolate and fresh dates.

12.40pm Back home to last night’s leftovers: roast chook, green beans, lemon juice, oil and parsley.

3.20pm It’s hot today. We’ve come to the beach with a wedge of watermelon, a hunk of haloumi and my mother’s bread.

6.40pm Dinner was to be a quick fish soup with barramundi offcuts from work, carrot, onion, ginger and celery, but the boys ask for post-beach burgers. Papa caves in.

8.15pm We all have a gelato on the way home.

Dr Joanna McMillan says

Top marks for … A top-notch breakfast that provides a good protein hit from the eggs, bread and yoghurt, which helps to curb your appetite for the day, along with antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C from all the plant foods. Your mum’s homemade sourdough has a fabulous mix of nutritious seeds.

If you keep eating like this you’ll … Miss out on the protective effects that come from vegies, as this day fell short of your recommended five serves. Aim to get more different coloured vegetables into your day.

Why don’t you try … Adding a side order of greens or salad to the burger, including spinach or rocket with your eggs, or making soups with vegies and legumes to add to lunch or enjoy as a snack.

Season three of Savva Savas’ Three Food Memories podcast is out now.
