‘Four lamb sausages with mashed potato’: This Bachelor’s day on a plate

Nicole Economos

Luke Bateman is a lumberjack and former NRL player. Here, the 28-year-old shares his day on a plate.

The lumberjack scores top points from Joanna for eating mostly whole foods and no ultra-processed foods.

5.30am Three eggs sunny side up accompanied by some of Mum’s homemade Worcestershire sauce and a cup of black tea.

9am Two chicken chilli tenders and another cup of black tea.

12.30pm Today’s lunch is leftovers from last night’s dinner – a coconut and cashew chicken curry, with basmati rice and green beans. I follow it up with a cup of black tea at 3pm.

6.30pm Four lamb sausages with mashed potato and mixed veg.

9pm Cup of camomile tea.

Dr Joanna McMillan says:

Top marks for…
Eating mostly whole foods and no ultra-processed foods. You score points for getting vegetables into two meals and tea provides a rich source of beneficial antioxidants associated with health, including brain health and performance.

If you keep eating like this you’ll…
Starve your gut microbiome. The collection of bacteria and other microbes that live in your gut thrive on different fibre types and this day was lacking in both total fibre and fibre diversity.

Why don’t you try…
Enjoying your eggs with wholegrain sourdough, or serving them on top of a bowl of baked beans. Snack on a mix of berries and nuts. Choose brown basmati rice over white and keep the skins on your potatoes when you make mash.

Luke Bateman is part of the new series of The Bachelors, screening on Network 10.
