7.30am A ginger shot to get my digestive system going after waking up.

8am Some vitamin C and a protein pre-workout drink mixed with a zero-sugar sports drink to prepare my body for training.

8.45am Greek mango yoghurt, to help me last through weights and practice. Easy on my stomach as well.

12.30pm Protein shake: 20 grams of protein mixed in with glutamine and creatine for recovery benefits after training.

1.30pm Lunch is a chicken wrap with lettuce, tomato and chili mayo, to replace the kilojoules I just burned off through practice.

3.30pm Turmeric shot to help with body inflammation. I then follow it at 5pm with a cookies and cream protein bar.

7pm A Mediterranean salad with chicken.

Dr Joanna McMillan says

Top marks for … A dinner based on one of the world’s healthiest eating patterns. The Mediterranean diet is associated with many health benefits including better heart health, brain health and gut health, and lower risks of several types of cancer.

If you keep eating like this you’ll … Possibly find yourself falling short on energy. You’re eating very little for an athlete with high-energy and nutrient demands. Having chicken at two meals also limits your array of nutrients that come from a more diverse diet.

Why don’t you try … Adding a substantial breakfast after training rather than just relying on a protein shake; for example, an omelette with cheese and mushrooms, with sides of vegies such as asparagus, spinach and tomato, and wholegrain sourdough with avocado to provide fibre and good fats. Swap the chicken for tuna or salmon in your wrap and mix up your food sources of protein across the week.

Denzel Valentine plays guard for the Sydney Kings. The Sydney Kings are currently in the NBL finals competing to win.
