Why this smoothie is a ‘terrific choice’, according to a dietitian

6am A loose-leaf tea with my golden retriever, Bear, followed by 10 minutes of meditation.

8.15am A smoothie including strawberry, banana, maple syrup, peanut butter, organic hemp protein and pistachio granola on my way into the office.

12pm Lunch is a homemade chicken, halloumi, pumpkin and pesto rice salad.

1pm A quick break to get an iced almond latte from the cafe downstairs, then a mini chocolate bite that I found on my desk.

3pm A dark chocolate and raspberry muesli bar before heading into another meeting.

7.30pm On my way home, I picked up a burger on a gluten-free bun with a side of zucchini chips. I have Crohn’s disease, so I try to avoid gluten as much as I can. I finish my night with a hot chocolate mixed with my SWIISH collagen. Before bed, I’ll always have my gut powder, probiotics and a few daily vitamins.

Top marks for… Your breakfast smoothie blending fruit with peanut butter, hemp and granola. This is a terrific choice for on-the-go. Hemp is one of the most digestible and highest quality plant proteins, as well as being a source of anti-inflammatory fats.

If you keep eating like this you’ll… Run the risk of being low on fibre, as many gluten-free foods lack this. Recent research on Crohn’s shows eating fibre during periods of remission reduces the risk of flare-ups. You are also short on vegies but may find cooked vegetables easier to digest than raw.

Why don’t you try… Using black or brown rice, or quinoa in your salad and add cooked broccoli or cauliflower. Make some vegie soups with added protein from chicken, meat or seafood, and store in your freezer for nights when you don’t want to cook. Oily fish three times a week, or possibly omega-3 supplements, may help to reduce inflammation in your gut.
