A sneaky chocolate bar on the way to the pub: A performer’s day on a plate

Nicole Economos

Musician and actor Brendan Maclean, 34, shares his day on a plate.

7am A large flat white, caffeinating for rehearsals. I also pop a 1000mg vitamin C tablet to stave off scurvy. Then I nibble a few pieces of pain au chocolat while sipping a cold brew.

11am A tuna and avocado sushi roll and a sparkling water. I also have three fruit chews.

1pm A beef burrito with rice, black beans, guacamole, salsa and corn, plus a frozen mango margarita.

2pm Two more fruit chews.

5.30pm I sneak a Cherry Ripe on the walk to the pub, where I down two schooners of apple cider.

8pm A Portuguese chicken burger and a can of soft drink.

Top marks for … The vitamin C tablet, given that you had few fruit and vegies in your day! But it would be much better to get vitamin C from foods as they also provide other nutrients, antioxidants and fibre.

If you keep eating like this you’ll … Get away with it while you’re young and active, but the lack of protective plant compounds will take a toll over time. More immediately, the sugar in the confectioneries and fizzy drinks impacts dental health, and your gut health may be poor due to lack of fibre.

Why don’t you try … Having a proper breakfast – fruit with yoghurt and wholegrain toast with nut butter and honey would be perfect. Boost fibre and vegies by having a side salad with dinner and your burger in a wholemeal bun.

Brendan Maclean stars in L’Hôtel, playing at the Sydney Opera House until November 13.

Adam Liaw's linguine with mussels, capers and cream

Mussels are affordable and delicious, and they work perfectly with pasta. I like to remove the shells from about half the mussels in pasta dishes – just so the dish is a little easier to eat.
