Good afternoon, here’s a recap of what’s happened today:
- Just moments before his bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump raised the subject of nuclear weapons in a Truth Social post, vowing to immediately resume testing them.
- In opening statements before their meeting began, Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and said he hoped the two countries would have a “fantastic relationship for a long period of time”.
- In his remarks, Xi said it was “normal for the two leading economies of the world to have frictions now and then”. He said China and the US should be partners and friends. “I always believe that China’s development goes hand-in-hand with your vision to make America great again,” Xi said.
- The media has now been ushered out and the meeting is continuing behind closed doors.
