That’s a wrap on Tuesday’s quarter-final action in a day of top remaining players taking down their opponents in straight sets.
But even as the scoreboard showed commanding leads for the winners, not all matches were straightforward.
Victoria Azarenka clinched the biggest upset, prevailing over third-seed Jessica Pegula on Tuesday night in just over an hour and a half. The two-time Australian Open champion will go on to play Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the semi-finals.
Pegula said the humid, sweaty conditions slowed her game while Azarenka displayed an explosiveness on court from the outset. “She was going to take everything if I don’t try to win myself,” Azarenka said on court afterwards.
Men’s third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also said his three-set win over Czech Jiri Lehecka was “one of the most difficult” so far of the competition. Tsitsipas at one point fought off a possible breakpoint from 0-40 to win that game. He’ll now play 18th seed Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals.
At 24, Stefanos Tsitsipas has graduated from the revolving Next Generation.
The Greek star’s Australian coach Mark Philippoussis instead references maturity and experience as his secret weapons these days as he tries finally to advance past the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.
Tsitsipas, the highest-ranked player left in the draw at No.4, will have a fourth chance to make the Australian Open men’s singles final thanks to a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 dismissal of giant-killing Czech Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday night.
He needed both those qualities Philippoussis highlighted ahead of his quarter-final, which he swung firmly in his favour with a clutch performance in the second-set tiebreak that was packed with breathtaking winners after Lehecka seemed poised to level the contest.
Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas has given a post-match on court interview.
Here’s a taste of what he had to say.
Q: Stefanos, you were super fired up and I understand why. That was a very difficult match. Even though it was three sets, he was playing some amazing tennis. What were the keys for you tonight to get the win?
A: Well, yeah, I can say it was a fair dinkum type of performance. But, you know, I did a lot of... I don’t know. I don’t know, it felt different this time from any other match. But the most important thing at the end is that I found a solution. It was a very difficult three-setter, one of the most difficult ones I had so far in the competition. I think Jiri ... had a very good tournament. He is someone who has started playing well recently, and I wish him the very best in the future because he is a great player
