That's it for today...

A crazy end to a very, very long day of football. Spain broke the record for passes in a World Cup game but couldn't break down the Russians, as they laboured to a 1-1 draw. The host nation showed no desire to try and win the game for the most part and were more than happy to take it to a shootout.

Of course, Russia won and eliminated one of the tournament favourites - Igor Akinfeev was the hero, saving spot kicks from Koke and Iago Aspas, while all four Russians nailed their penalties.

Immediately after the game, Spain and Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta announced his retirement from international football, after a whopping 130 caps.

And then, we had a pretty crazy opening and closing to the game between Croatia and Denmark, with a thoroughly average middle.

We saw two goals scored in the fastest ever time at a World Cup with Mathias Jorgensen scoring a scrappy one for Denmark in the opening minute, before Mario Mandzukic equalised with the clock at 03:40.

The game caught fire in the closing stages with Jorgensen saving a certain goal with a foul on Ante Rebic, who was played clean into the box by Luka Modric and had rounded the keeper.

The defender saved the goal, and his keeper Kasper Schmeichel saved the ensuing penalty from Modric.

We went to a shootout and both keepers played out of their minds - the Danish number one saving two more, but his Croatian counterpart stopped three, sending them into the quarters to take on Russia.

The field is down to 12, and we'll make it ten tomorrow when Brazil play Mexico, and Japan play Belgium. See you then.

Full Time: Croatia win on penalties, 3-2

An epic performance from both keepers, it has to be said. Each made three saves, Schmeichel one in extra time and two in the shootout, Subasic denying Eriksen, Schone and Jorgensen from 12 yards.

Sensational stuff, and the most relieved man on the pitch will be Luka Modric. He missed a penalty with a couple of minutes to go in extra time, but then shook it off and scored in the shootout as his team won.

The 1-1 draw ends with the Croatians going through, 3-2 on penalties.

Another save for Subasic - Croatia win!!

Jorgensen goes down the middle with a stuttering run-up and Subasic leaves enough of his body there to knock it clear!

If Croatia score, it's all over...here's Barcelona's Ivan Rakitic..'

And he sends Schmeichel the wrong way!!! It's all over!

Brilliant save by Subasic - and then Schmeichel follows suit!

Lasse Schone went left, it was fairly wide but a good height for the keeper who dives the right way!

If Pivaric can convert, Croatia will be one kick away...and it's saved!!! What drama!!

Sudden death now. Next team to score with the other missing wins.

Krohn-Delhi slots it home, as does Modric

The veteran calmly rolls it into the left corner after sending the keeper the wrong way.

And here comes Modric, who missed in extra time from the spot...and he slams it down the middle! Relief for the captain, that only just missed the trailing feet of Schmeichel who dove to the same spot as he did on Modric's attempt during the match.

All square at 2-2 after three kicks each.

Kjaer buries his penalty - then Kramaric does likewise!

What a hit that is - he could have told the keeper exactly where he was putting it, and it still would have gone in. Buries it in the top right corner, Denmark strike first.

Kramaric strides forward confidently for Croatia...and sends Schmeichel the wrong way!

Both teams miss to start!

Perfect start for Croatia! Great save from Subasic and he deflects the ball away from the bottom corner into the woodwork and clear.

It doesn't last long, though - Badelj steps up for Croatia and the trailing legs of Schmeichel deny him! Weak penalty and it's 0-0 after one round.

Remember, it's five kicks each.

End of extra time: Denmark 1, Croatia 1

After just one minute of stoppage time (the penalty mess alone took up like 2-3 minutes, how?) the whistle goes.

Gutting for Croatia, who were one spot kick away from a spot in the quarters and now, they have to shake that off and hold their nerve, as Russia did earlier today.

Modric with a chance to make amends but his shot from distance is straight at the keeper.

Assuming there's no stoppage time drama, you have to wonder whether the skipper will be stepping up to take a penalty after that miss. Surely he shakes it off and goes again?

SCHMEICHEL SAVES IT!!!

That's unbelievable. Weak penalty to the keeper's left and he dives the right way and falls on the ball. A superb save and we remain tied with three and a half minutes to go.

Kasper Schmeichel, with his legendary dad Peter watching on in the crowd, take a bow. What a moment.
