That's it for today, let's recap a thrilling night of games

By

Australia were unlucky losers in their first game of the tournament, going down 2-1 to France in the early kick-off.

The two teams exchanged penalties - although France's was not without VAR controversy - before a deflect Paul Pogba effort crossed the line, only just, to hand the heavyweights the win.

Australia play Denmark on Thursday morning in what is now a must-win game.

Full Time: Croatia 2, Nigeria 0

By

A dominant and easy win for Croatia in the end - they were clearly the better side and controlled the tempo of the match for the entire 90 minutes.

Nigeria were pretty unfortunate with how the first goal went in, but there can be no arguments about the penalty - which was as clear as you'll see.

Croatia now sit alone at the top of their group, after Iceland's draw with Argentina.

Selfish from Kovacic - the ball comes to him in the area, with just one defender near him he elects to shoot instead of squaring it to the totally unmarked Perisic for what certainly would have been a third goal.

It's not going to matter for the result, but that's a big opportunity missed. Nice save from Uzoho, for what it's worth.

Moses snaps a shot from about 15 yards but it's blocked - then the skipper John Obi Mikel makes way for another striker, Simy Nwankwo to try and make something happen in this dying stages.

Brozovic goes into the book for trying to slow the play down after a foul.

Nothing doing for Nigeria, as Croatia make their final change - Mandzukic comes off and Marko Pjaca will get the final few minutes.

And Australia are going to win the World Cup. This tweet confirms it.

Nigeria pushing and probing but not a lot happening. Kelechi Iheanacho has come off the bench in the place of Odion Ighalo and blazes a shot wide.

Rebic has come off for Croatia with Mateo Kovacic on the final few minutes.

Meanwhile, this was the scenes in Denmark earlier today. Let's hope they don't repeat on Thursday morning.

Modric makes no mistake!

By

Calmly put away by the Real Madrid maestro - he whacks it into the side netting, sending the teenage keeper the wrong way.

That should be curtains for Nigeria in this one - they need to find two goals in 20 minutes.

Penalty to Croatia!

By

The corner is swung in, William Troost-Ekong basically gives Mario Mandzukic a massive hug from behind, and pulls him down. Great decision, and quite frankly most fans would love to see more of the penalty box shenanigans that defenders get away with punished.

No question that it was a foul, and Luka Modric will be entrusted with the spot kick.

Victor Moses goes down very softly in the penalty area and the referee doesn't even think about awarding a penalty - no VAR needed then, he fell to the turf as he came to shoulder to shoulder with Ivan Strinic.

At the other end, Perisic wins a corner after Shehu recovers well to prevent a raid into the penalty area.

Changes for both sides as we enter the final half an hour -Brozovic on for Kramaric as Croatia make the first substitution of the game before a minute later, Ahmed Musa comes on for Alex Iwobi.

Diddy won't be pleased with how this is going.
