FIFA World Cup: Day six, live scores, results, highlights

Let's take a look back on the day's action...

By

First up we had the second-fastest red card in the entire history of the World Cup, with Colombia playing basically the entire game a man down after Carlos Sanchez used his arm to block a goal-bound shot from Japan's Shinji Kagawa in the third minute.

Kagawa converted the spot kick, and although Colombia drew level thanks to a clever free kick from Juan Quintero, the Samurai Blue pulled ahead again in the second half thanks to a header from Yuya Osako, and would stay there for the rest of the match - becoming the first ever Asian side to beat a South American opponent at the World Cup.

Full Time: Russia 3, Egypt 1

By

And that's that - Egypt are done, Russia are through to the last 16 (not mathematically assured, but it would take an exact string of results and huge goal difference swings to change either of these outcomes).

Russia came out the stronger side in both halves, and were rewarded for that enterprise in the second half via an own goal, before pulling away with a double in the space of two minutes.

Mo Salah got one back from the penalty spot but a late flurry from the Pharaohs didn't yield anything more than that.

Egypt out of time

By

89th minute: Amr Warda pulls his shot wide from the edge of the area, and they're all out of time now.

What a disaster this is for Egypt - they came into this tournament as many people's dark horse to make it to the round of 16, or perhaps even further, and now instead, their tournament is over less than a week after Robbie Williams gave us all the finger.

Egypt running out of time now

By

85th minute: They've emptied the decks with Mohsen coming off for Mahmoud Kahraba, although I'm not sure why you wouldn't take a defender off instead and leave an extra forward on.

Either way, Russia have settled back down after a crazy few minutes and should be able to cruise home from here. A goal in the next couple of minutes would be sensational for us as neutrals, though.

Lifeline: Salah beats Akinfeev from the penalty spot.AP

Surely that's a penalty?

By

79th minute: I'm flabbergasted - Mohsen is thrown to the ground by Kutepov, that's as blatant as the one Harry Kane didn't get last night.

No VAR check here either as I continue to wonder about the consistency of the technology. As Egypt wonder why they don't have another spot kick, Dzyuba comes off for Smolov.

Meanwhile, celebrations are getting a bit rowdy in the England camp

It seems like a wild affair at their training base after a dramatic win over Tunisia last night..

Salah scores!

By

He drills it down the middle with height, just above the diving Akinfeev - still about 20 minutes to go if you inlcude stoppage time and Egypt can dare to dream of the unlikeliest of comebacks.

Before the game resumes, Cheryshev comes off to be replaced by Daler Kuzyaev.

Free kick right on the edge of the box - but is that a penalty? It is!

By

72nd minute: Odd moment here - Mo Salah has his shirt pulled and the referee initally gives a free kick just outside the box.

But, the VAR is here to overturn that and there can be no objections really - he might have started the foul outside the box, but it definitely continued over the line. Salah will step up...

Mohsen misses - as Egypt make a change

By

68th minute: Lovely lay-off from Salah to his strike partner, but his attempt to pass it delicately into the corner of the net is off the mark and wide of the post.

Trezeguet's taken off at the next exchange, Ramadan Sobhi coming on.

Pure joy: Russia's Denis Cheryshev celebrates after scoring his team second goal. AP

THREE FOR RUSSIA!!

By

62nd minute: Game over now! Dzyuba gets his second of the tournament, and Russia's second in the last couple of minutes.

Disaster at the back for Ali Gabr, who inexplicably takes a touch inside his own penalty area with the big striker bearing down on him - he has his pocket picked and the ball is smashed home for 3-0.

Russia, the lowest ranked team in the tournament, who were in horrid form in the leadup to the World Cup, have racked up eight goals in two games and barring the most outrageous string of results imaginable, have reached the last 16.
