Waratahs not worried about fading finals picture, but problems are piling up

By

The Waratahs are confident there is enough time to salvage their fading finals hopes after slipping to a fourth consecutive defeat on Friday night at Allianz Stadium – this time going down to a determined Rebels outfit 27-21.

But standing in the way of playoffs for NSW are mounting injury problems, a lack of clear insight into the team’s weak points and a brutal month ahead on the fixture list.

In what can only be described as a desperately ugly game of footy, the Waratahs were left holding a losing bonus point for the fourth straight week after the Rebels powered home and over the top of the hosts in the second half.

Instant impact from Tupou

‘There is something not working’: Gordon

By

Let’s hear from the skippers.

Waratahs captain Jake Gordon: “It was a pretty poor finish. It was back and forth, we put ourselves into a position to compete again but we stuffed up the kickoff.

“It is getting a bit repetitive now. We are competing but we want to be a good team and good teams ice those opportunities. You have to review those moments but there is something not working, especially when the heat is on us. It is disappointing.”

Rebels captain Rob Leota: “It is awesome, especially after the last two weeks. To come up here and get the win is awesome. It will give us confidence to go home next week and get another dub.”

That’s all she wrote. The Waratahs have dropped their fourth straight game after Filipo Daugunu scored a try on the siren to turn a nail-biting finish into an upset win for the Rebels.

The Waratahs had a chance to drive down field after Grant’s try and win the game, but loose passing saw them go all the way back their own goal and concede a five-metre scrum.

It wasn’t a pretty game, with mistakes aplenty from both sides.

But the Rebels’ power game got them home in the end, with Taniela Tupou proving a decisive figure off the bench.

Hold the phone … Waratahs score to make it a one-point game

We are in for a nail biting finish. Will Harrison has set up a try for Jack Grant and the Rebels are now only leading by one point, with four minutes to play.

Hammer blow from Thor

The Rebels have scored again and guess who? Yep, it’s that man Taniela Tupou.

After causing plenty of damage to the depleted NSW pack at scrum time, Tupou charged onto a ball near the Waratahs line and scored a try to extend the Rebels lead to eight points.

The tiring Waratahs are going out of this game backwards and need someone to spark them into life.

Rebels back in front after Lancaster try

By

The Rebels have re-taken the lead after a Filipo Daugunu run gave them good field position, and led to a rolling maul in the left corner.

This time the lineout worked well for the visitors and from a well-set platform, Alex Mafi broke left and found Darby Lancaster open. The winger dived in the corner and scored to give the Rebels a one-point lead.

Gleeson charges over to give Waratahs the lead

This game is flat-out nuts.

Soon after the Waratahs had botched a prime scoring opportunity when lock Miles Amatosero missed the ball on the ball when trying to tap it and charge to the line, the hosts finally crashed over for a second try to Langi Gleeson.

Wave upon wave of attack proved too much for a solid Rebels defence, and Gleeson charged hard onto a short pass by reserve halfback Jack Grant.

Taniela enters but Rebels don’t make hay

The man known as Thor has entered and he immediately munched up the Waratahs scrum and won a penalty for the Rebels. But strangely the Rebels turned down points, or even another scrum, and went to the line for a rolling maul.

It was repelled by the Waratahs, and they turned defence into attack. But a promising piece of play came to nothing when a chip for Dylan Pietsch saw the winger just knock on - and with a potential penalty for an early tackle on the winger not paid.

The Rebels are still leading but their lineout has been diabolical for most of the night.

Okay, so that wasn’t what you’d call a classic opening half. Let’s call a spade a spade and say that 40 minutes of footy had her fair share of warts.

The half started with both sides unwilling to take much risk, and playing fairly aimless game of kick-tennis.

The Rebels had the better of the territory and possession but they’ve already conceded 14 turnovers, mostly through dropped ball.

The opportunistic try set up by Louwrens sparked a brief flurry of activity, and it woke the Tahs up, who responded with a gamblers’ try too - via a couple of nice offloads.

But Pietsch botched a second when he didn’t pass to an unmarked Mahe Vailanu moments later.

Neither side is setting the world on fire in attack, with poor options and a haste to go wide instead of attacking directly.

Sinclair yellow carded for a high tackle, Rebels take lead

By

Hugh Sinclair has been given a yellow card for dangerous head contact with Lachie Anderson, that left both men with cuts and blood all over them.

It would appear Sinclair has mitigation with Anderson dipping into the tackle, but you never know. The TMO will now review.

The Rebels banked an easy penalty goal and now lead.
