Ruthless Lions crush Reds but pick up more injury concerns

Match report: Reds 12 Lions 52

By Iain Payten

For a moment, Reds fans dared to dream. After 25 minutes Queensland led the British and Irish by two tries to one and a lively Suncorp Stadium was up and about.

But then reality bit. And bit hard.

Fast-forward to the 80th minute and the Lions had scored the next 45 points, finishing up as 52-12 winners in an ominous performance for the Wallabies squad watching on in Newcastle.

Just how many of the same Lions team will be back on deck in Brisbane on July 19 for the first Test remains to be seen, but the quality of display from almost every Lion who has played so far on tour suggests the potency is squad-wide.

English fullback Elliot Daly has arguably been the surprise pick of the Lions and he was seen clutching his arm in ice.

Hopefully, nothing too serious as Daly has brought a lot of class to the tour so far.

We will keep an eye on this one.

Full time Reds 12 Lions 52

The Lions rub some more salt into the Reds’ wounds with a try with the clock in the red at Suncorp Stadium

Captain Maro Itoje easily could have put the Reds out of their misery with a kick into the stands, but the second rower was desperate to tick the scoreboard over 50 and he eventually got it, with replacement centre Garry Ringrose diving over for a try to leave the score at 12-52 to the Lions.

The Lions were big, brutal and ruthless in breaking down the smaller Reds who were punished all over the ground.

The Reds’ inside centre Hunter Paisami was a rare spark as they were outmuscled throughout the game and there was some similarities between last week’s game against the Force.

In the first half, the Lions were rusty with a strong start from the home side, but their superior conditioning really came through in the second-half.

Frustrating night for the Reds with five minutes left

By

The Reds are fighting to keep the Lions below their second half-century scoreline on this tour as we go into the final five minutes.

Everything the Reds have tried in the second half has just not come off and the Lions have ruthlessly punished them.

It was a game that started with so much promise, but the Lions’ depth of quality and the physical size differences have come into play tonight.

There’s also been a stand out performance from Maro Itoje the Lions captain.

That sums up the game as Huw Jones runs in another Lions’ try

By

Tim Ryan tries an audacious chip and chase, the problem is Huw Jones is a huge centre, and barely skips in the air to take the ball and run it the length of the field for a try.

The Reds are still trying to play adventurous rugby, but the Lions are ready to punish anything that isn’t absolutely perfect.

This is nervous times for Australian rugby supporters. If the Lions are doing this to an albeit weakened Reds team, what are they going to do the Waratahs on Saturday?

Freeman gets his second try for Lions

By Iain Payten

Tommy Freeman spins and gets his second try down.

Gap in class now on full display. That’s to be expected but the Reds will be disappointed with their performance here, if they ever subject themselves to a review.

They’ve made multiple mistakes and have shown very little in attack when they sustain possession.

On the flipside they’ve let the Lions exit their half with no real headaches.

hat has this told us about what’s coming for the Wallabies?

The last Welshman standing gets his first try

By

It’s getting rough for the Reds in Brisbane.

Welsh breakaway Jac Morgan bundles over for his first try of the tour and it’s looking very ominous for the Reds as they replace their props.

There are a huge amount of tackles being missed, that’s very easy to type behind a keyboard, not when Duhan Van Der Merwe is charging at you.

The Lions bomb squad is on

By

It’s a whole new front row for the Lions, Alex Mitchell is on at 9 and Fin Smith is on for Finn Russell at 10.

This could make life even more difficult for a rapidly tiring Reds side.

It was interesting that when the referee was playing advantage to the Reds after 15 phases, their halfback Kalani Thomas asked for for it rather than playing on. The Reds just cannot get beyond the gain line. They are not unsurprisingly completely outmuscled by the Lions in defence and cannot make inches.

Lions get off to perfect start with try

By

We’re back for the second half and the Reds are still sticking of their DNA of running rugby. It’s entertaining, but it costs them.

Seru Uru plays a high risk risk offload that is just dropped. The Lions get the perfect attacking platform, Bundee Aki muscles through the defence, Jamison Gibson-Park snipes and Maro Itoje muscles over.
