Report: Double blow as Tigers lose both halves in loss to Rabbitohs

By AAP

Wests Tigers fear they could lose Jarome Luai for a month after he and halves partner Adam Douiehi were both injured in their 20-16 loss to South Sydney.

In a horror final 15 minutes for the Tigers in Gosford on Saturday night, Luai first limped off with a knee injury in the same set that Souths took a four-point lead.

Then while chasing the game with two minutes to play, Doueihi was left stranded on the far sideline after clutching at his right hamstring.

Both will head for scans, following a match that the Tigers dominated the territorial battle but only scored two tries just before halftime.

The Tigers have cleared Luai of a season-ending ACL rupture, but fear he is still set for a stint on the sidelines.

“It doesn’t look good. He’s going to get scans obviously. Medical staff say he will be out for a little bit. Hopefully maybe four (weeks),” coach Benji Marshall said.

“(Adam)’s got some tightness in his hamstring. He’s had a pretty big week with the load with what he has had to do at No.7.

“He’ll get a scan, hopefully it’s not too bad.”

Even with the loss, Marshall walked away pleased with his side’s effort after an ordinary start from which early penalties and errors handed Souths a 12-0 lead.

Where the Tigers’ attack was free-flowing last week in their 44-16 win over North Queensland, Marshall insisted the joint-venture had found their blueprint as a side.

The same could not be said for Wayne Bennett, who was highly critical of the Rabbitohs performance in the win.

Bennett offered little praise for the Rabbitohs defence, despite them holding on for 26 consecutive play-the-balls at one stage in the first half.

And he had little praise for their attack, where two key Alex Johnston plays won them the game in the second half.

After trailing 14-12 at the break when Latrell Mitchell gave away an eight-point try for contact on Tigers centre Heamasi Makasini as he scored, Souths took their chances after the break.

Johnston first batted back a Jamie Humphreys bomb for his centre Mitchell to score, before the NRL’s greatest every try-scorer broke a 16-16 deadlock when he chased down a Cody Walker grubber.

Jye Gray also had some nice touches, scoring Souths’ first down the right edge, throwing a ball for the Rabbitohs second through Jack Wighton moments later.

The fullback also outjumped Tigers fullback Jahream Bula late in the game to claim a bomb, ending one of the joint-venture’s last attacking raids.

“Nothing pleased me (about that game),” Bennett said.

“We’re better than what we played tonight. If we keep playing like that we won’t be in contention for anything except the bottom end of the competition.”

Luai and Doueihi injured in Tigers defeat

That’s it. Full-time on the Central Coast.

It’s the Rabbitohs who walk away with a narrow 20-16 victory.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, they lose more than the two points tonight, with both halves Jarome Luai and Adam Doueihi leaving the field injured in the second half.

For Luai, it’s a left knee injury, while it’s almost certainly a hamstring for Doueihi.

Match report to come.

Doueihi off injured for Tigers

A penalty for Jye Gray might just be the end of the Tigers night after he’s collected high by Kai Pearce-Paul.

But that’s the least of the Tigers worries, with Adam Doueihi now coming from the field with what looks like a hamstring injury.

That’s both the halves off injured for the Tigers as we enter the final minutes of the game.

Johnston scores as Bunnies nudge ahead

The Luai injury might just have shifted momentum in the Rabbitohs favour after the two teams were in the grind for 10 minutes.

Jeral Skelton and Latrell Mitchell over run a Cody Walker grubber, but Alex Johnston is there to clean up the mess.

He adds another try to his record and puts the Rabbitohs ahead by four.

Luai off with left knee injury

Bad news for the Tigers.

Jarome Luai has twisted his left knee and is in big trouble.

He tries to fight on, but he can’t do it anymore. Luai is off and Apisai Koroisau takes to the field in his place.

Jye Gray is struggling in back play.

Looks like nothing more than some serious cramping, but it’s inhibiting him nonetheless.

Mitchell mistake from the kick-off

By

One error to another.

Latrell Mitchell sends the kick-off soaring long. So long it looks like it’s about to hit the Central Coast highway.

Terrell May easily gets a foot into touch and catches the ball.

That’s a fresh set for the Tigers from the Rabbitohs 30 metre line.

Mamouzelos error levels scores

Oh Peter Mamouzelos, that was silly.

Keaon Koloamatangi loses the ball from the kick-off and Mamouzelos, who is offside because he was in front of Koloamatangi from the kick-off attempts to pick up the ball.

That’s a penalty for the Tigers, who take the kick and make it all square in Gosford.

Mitchell scores to give Rabbitohs the lead

Just as they were getting into the grind, the Rabbitohs go across to score.

It’s Latrell Mitchell – who was with the trainer looking a bit hairy only moments ago – who goes across to score after Alex Johnston bats the ball back into his hands.

Mitchell can’t add the extras, which means the Rabbitohs have a two-point lead in this contest.
