Sydney Test as it happened: Rain wraps up day two after Warner’s fairytale finish comes early

Just in from our man Tom Decent at the SCG, we won’t have any more play today due to rain.

Bad light took the players off around 2.20pm today, so that’s the best part of four hours we’ll lose from today’s play and 44 overs in total. We’ll be back early on day three at 10am, and will start every remaining morning early to make up some of that lost time.

Thankfully, the forecast is a fair bit easier on the eye over the next few days.

Australia will resume at 2-116 on day three after losing David Warner and Usman Khawaja. Marnus Labuschagne (23 not out) and Steve Smith (six not out) will return on a pitch that should keep lower and turn more and more as the game wears on. Crucial morning tomorrow given Pakistan already have 300+ on the board. Until then.

Hardly encouraging scenes from the SCG now, heavy covers are going onto the pitch and wider square with light drizzle hanging over proceedings.

As we all know, once the players come off, it can be tough getting the back out there.

Tea ended a while ago but as you can see elsewhere on the Herald homepage, there’s a big storm moving east from the Blue Mountains.

The hope is the storm will swing north and largely miss the SCG. Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan summing up the frustrations of many when it was just bad light holding us up.

Big appeal for caught behind against Khawaja, hooking at a short ball down leg. Ruled not out and Rizwan the keeper immediately calls for DRS. He’s convinced and rightly so.

Hot spot shows a hint of glove from Khawaja and it’s a long way from the body. No doubt about it really and Aamer Jamal has the breakthrough again.

A good spell has been duly rewarded and Khawaja is gone after a dogged 47 – he took 143 balls and more than three hours over the innings.

Steve Smith to the crease and Pakistan are setting him up for the short ball with fielders out for the hook. Smith’s first ball – a 140km/hr bouncer – has him ducking. The second, same again, but Smith is pulling with authority backward of square and straight to the boundary. This looks like a bit of fun.

Steady as she goes for Australia as the Pakistan spinners continue to ask questions and the run-rate continues at 2.5 an over.

The visitors have made a double bowling change with Aamer Jamal and Sajid Khan into the attack but Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have an answer for everything at the moment – especially Khawaja, who thumps a fine pull shot over deep square leg as he approaches another 50 at the SCG.

That will go nicely with his four hundreds here. Just par for the course if you’re in Australia’s top order really.
