Key Blues fire in AFLW upset of Lions

By Shayne Hope

Carlton captain Abbie McKay and boom recruit Tara Bohanna starred as the Blues produced a stunning 14-point upset of AFLW heavyweights Brisbane to climb into the top eight.

A stunning five-goal second quarter laid the platform for Mathew Buck’s side in their 9.4 (58) to 6.8 (44) victory at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday.

McKay (32 disposals, seven clearances), Mimi Hill (25, five) and Dayna Finn (29 touches, one goal) all shone for Carlton. Bohanna kicked a game-high three goals, including two crucial majors in the final term to help seal the result. It gave the Blues a 2-1 start to the season while the Lions – last year’s beaten grand finalists – slipped to 1-2.

“It’s just such a good feeling,” former Gold Coast forward Bohanna told Fox Footy post-match.

“After the Hawks (loss) last week, we just knew if we stick to our process we can absolutely go with the best.

“That was what we did today and I just think the work rate of everyone was elite.

“We just stuck to the processes and we’re just super, super happy.”

Cartlon had eyes on an upset after kicking the first two goals against the run of play as Brisbane failed to make the most of their early dominance.

Buoyed by the bright start, the visitors ramped up their pressure and piled on five unanswered goals in the second term.

The best of them came from Keeley Sherar, who produced a brilliant right-foot snap when facing the boundary under pressure from three opponents.

Skipper McKay and fellow ball-winner Hill were superb in the first half and Erone Fitzpatrick kicked two majors, as the Blues led by 29 points at halftime.

Brisbane hit back hard and Ally Anderson (17 disposals, five clearances) lifted as the home side dominated the third quarter, kicking 3.3 to 0.1 to close within nine points.

But two Bohanna goals in the final quarter gave the Blues breathing space again and they held on for a stirring win.

Carlton can extend their positive start when they host the Western Bulldogs at Ikon Park in round four, while the Lions face a difficult interstate trip to take on Adelaide.

Harris said at the time that she considered the comments “sexual abuse on social media”.

“I don’t want to give oxygen to the trolls, but one thing that happens to come to my mind when I saw the comments … I can see in people’s photos they’ve got kids, or they’ve got daughters or women in their photos even, and that is the stuff I’m worried about,” she said.

100-point shellacking: Kangas dine out on Freo

By Shayne Hope

North Melbourne superstar Jasmine Garner suffered an ankle injury as the AFLW premiers continued their winning start to the new campaign with a record-breaking 100-point thumping of Fremantle.

Garner is set for scans after landing awkwardly in a second-quarter marking contest and playing no further part in the Kangaroos’ 18.6 (114) to 2.2 (14) victory at Fremantle Oval.

The result extended North’s winning streak to an AFLW record 15 matches, and they are unbeaten in 17 outings over two seasons after their near-perfect 2024 premiership campaign.

The Kangaroos also kicked a record AFLW score as Blaithin Bogue (four goals), Tahlia Randall (three), Amy Smith and Alice O’Loughlin (two each) feasted on an avalanche of opportunities in attack.

Concern for NM as Garner limps off field after ankle injury

North Melbourne’s premiership defence may be under threat, after superstar Jasmine Garner suffered an ankle injury during Sunday’s clash against Fremantle.

The star midfielder-forward landed awkwardly after marking the ball inside-50 during the second quarter and limped off the field clutching her left ankle and grimacing.

Garner had eight disposals and a goal before the injury occurred. Often regarded as one of the best players in the league, Garner was instrumental in North’s first flag last year and last week produced one of the best individual AFLW performances, kicking a career-best six goals from 30 disposals.

Demons ‘get away with murder’ in narrow win over Pies

By Hannah Kennelly

Collingwood have fallen just short of a thrilling upset against Melbourne, as two last-gasp chances went begging at Victoria Park and the Demons “got away with absolute murder”, according to captain Kate Hore.

Despite Collingwood’s valiant efforts, Melbourne triumphed by four points – just – as Grace Campbell’s shot after the siren crashed into the post.

Demons fans on the sidelines had already been holding their breath as Pies forward Imogen Barnett missed a shot at goal in the dying stages.

Melbourne coach Mick Stinear agreed with Hore’s reflection and said Demons had struggled to shake Collingwood.
