That’s all we have for today

By

Thanks for joining us for another day on the trade blog.

The player movement space continued to take shape today with Brandon Starcevich getting his wish with a trade to West Coast (with a series of picks and Fremantle also involved); Judd McVee getting to Fremantle for pick No.23; Suns star Sam Flanders getting to the Saints for pick No.7; and Oscar Allen getting to the Lions, with West Coast then receiving pick No.2 as compensation – bumping all the other picks down one.

The Eagles now have picks one and two in the draft. In fact, of the top eight picks in the draft now, West Coast, Richmond, Essendon and the Gold Coast have two each.

We’ll be back tomorrow to do it all again, with some of the biggest names in the game – including Charlie Curnow, Christian Petracca, Zach Merrett and Clayton Oliver – potentially off to new footy homes.

Bye for now.

Some thoughts on today’s developments

By

The Real Footy podcast is being released daily during the trade period, with the latest edition just dropping.

Today, we had Andrew Wu and our chief football writer Jake Niall in the studio for a snappy 20-minute chat about all the developments of day three of the trade-fest.

On top of their mind was the question of how much Melbourne will be willing to pay for Clayton Oliver to play for a rival club for the next five years? They discussed the intricacies of the star onballer’s falling out with his club and why the Giants are leading Collingwood in the haggling for his services.

Their chat also included updates on talks about the futures of Charlie Curnow, Christian Petracca and Zach Merrett. Have a listen below:

Allen leaves the nest out west

By

G’day, everyone. I’m Russell Bennett, and I’ll be steering the ship for the next little while tonight.

First up – a move that won’t shock anyone. West Coast have elected not to match the Lions’ offer for Oscar Allen, meaning the skipper moves to the other side of the country, and the rebuilding Eagles get pick No.2 in return, to go along with the top pick they already have, and pick No.13.

The Eagles had 72 hours to decide whether to match the contract the Lions offered, but they were never going to – given Allen wanted out, and they knew what they stood to gain.

Allen played 105 games for West Coast after being drafted out of West Perth with pick No.21 in 2017.

That’s all from me today

That’s all from me today on day three of the trade period. I’ll now hand over the reins to my colleague Russell Bennett, who will take you through to stumps.

Stand by for our podcast reviewing the day’s action and looking ahead to what may happen in the coming days.

Lions lodge free agency offer to Allen

By

The paperwork is in. Brisbane have officially made an offer to West Coast’s Oscar Allen.

The Eagles have until 4pm Saturday to decide if they will match the offer but that is unlikely as they are expected to receive pick two as compensation.

It comes hours after the Eagles, Fremantle and Brisbane took part in a trade of picks which enabled the Dockers to acquire defender Judd McVee from Melbourne for pick 23.

Why Flanders left the Suns

By

St Kilda’s first-choice centre square combination is already looking vastly different.

In come Tom De Koning and Sam Flanders while ruckman Rowan Marshall has requested a trade and Jack Steele, who has stood down as captain, has been told by the Saints he can look elsewhere.

Flanders is set for more opportunities in the Saints midfield after crossing from Gold Coast to Moorabbin for pick seven on Wednesday.

“I see myself as probably more of an inside midfielder. Gold Coast have got arguably one of the best midfields in the comp,” Flanders said on AFL Trade Radio.

Slow going for Blues, Swans in Curnow talks

By Jake Niall

Little progress has been made on a trade that would see Carlton’s dual Coleman medallist Charlie Curnow join either Sydney or Geelong.

The Blues have not had players offered up by the Swans as yet for Curnow, with any discussions to date focusing only on draft compensation for Curnow, who is open to joining either the Swans or Cats.

Curnow is yet to settle upon one of those clubs as his preference, according to a source familiar with the discussions, although the view for some time has been that Sydney is the club with the better draft position.

Geelong’s wish to land St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall is a further complication since they would potentially need a decent draft pick to prise Marshall out of the Saints.

Curnow, 28, has a further four years remaining on his hefty contract. The Blues are firm in their position that they will only trade Curnow for a deal that benefits them.

Hear from Sam Flanders

No more ‘punching down’ when dressing up, urges AFLW star

By Oliver Caffrey

Inaugural Carlton AFLW star Darcy Vescio has urged players to “not punch down” when dressing up for end-of-season celebrations.

Speaking at the AFLW’s Pride Round launch, Vescio has explained how all players need to be cognisant of their status as role models.

Geelong confirmed they are going to ditch their Mad Monday celebrations after widespread criticism of some controversial costumes and questionable social media antics, notably from star Bailey Smith, following their grand final defeat to the Brisbane Lions.

In a caption of a photo with Cats captain Patrick Dangerfield, Smith referenced the movie Brokeback Mountain, which depicts a complex romantic relationship between two cowboys, and wrote “this is what losing a granny does to ya”.

Tigers open to draft slide

By

Richmond are open to trading one of their prized picks in this year’s draft.

The Tigers have picks two and three, which will becomes three and four if, as expected, West Coast receive pick two as compensation for losing Oscar Allen as a free agent.

Pick two (as it stands) is Richmond’s natural pick for finishing 17th, and pick three is the selection the Tigers acquired from North Melbourne last year in a pick swap on draft night.

North gained pick 27, which they used on key position prospect Matt Whitlock, and Richmond’s second-round pick this year, which is 24.
