‘He wasn’t going shift the dial’: Vozzo on Hawks offer

By Roy Ward

The blame game between Essendon and Hawthorn has continued today following the failure to complete a trade for Dons skipper Zach Merrett.

The Hawks called Essendon’s demands “ridiculous” this morning after a deal couldn’t be reached before Wednesday night’s trade deadline and the Dons have hit back.

Bombers chief executive Craig Vozzo said his club wanted “a mature player” involved in the deal, but the Hawks only offered Henry Hustwaite (who has played 10 games since he was drafted in 2022) plus several high draft picks.

“Our position ... number one, two and three was retaining Zach, no doubt at all,” Vozzo said on AFL Trade Radio.

“Out of respect for Zach, he had a preference to move to Hawthorn. We had discussions and that involved mature players.”

Vozzo said Hustwaite was the only current player offered by the Hawks.

“First contact was about 30 hours before deadline with a first and final offer which had a seven-hour deadline. That contained Henry.

“Without demeaning Henry – he’s a very good footballer, but he wasn’t going to shift the dial in the context of his transaction.”

Vozzo also said he was disappointed in how the Hawks approached negotiations, given his club was clear in wanting a significant return.

“I was disappointed in the way that was presented,” Vozzo said.

“It was an unusual way to go about things, particularly in the context of someone of Zach’s ilk. He’s an outstanding player and great person, and they knew he was contracted and very important to us.

“I was [disappointed], to be honest, but we all go about our business in different ways and that’s the way they decided to approach it. I was surprised.”

Dogs will keep chasing backs

By Roy Ward

The Western Bulldogs approached several key defenders and may well do so again in the coming years.

The Bulldogs’ player acquisition and strategy manager Michael Regan revealed St Kilda gun Callum Wilkie wasn’t the only established defender approached. He said they had “meaningful discussions” with other clubs but didn’t reveal which players they chased.

Regan said the Dogs have a long-term strategy at play over the coming years, and didn’t rule out bringing in a player in the pre-season draft or free agency if they can improve the side.

“We have to make sure that anyone we bring in will make a meaningful impact for the football club – that is the lens we will look at that through,” Regan told Trade Radio.

Blues better without a two-time Coleman medallist? Their footy boss thinks so

By

Blues football boss Chris Davies said Voss now has a “better” team at his disposal with two-time Coleman medallist and All-Australian Charlie Curnow out of the picture.

“I think that we all said through the period that if things were going to change, it was going to need to be a significant deal,” Davies told Trade Radio of the move that resulted in the Blues ending up with Will Hayward and three first-round picks.

“We wanted Charlie to be a Carlton player into the future. Charlie made it clear throughout the trade period, and before that even, that he was wanting to leave our footy club.

“It was our responsibility to have a think about what we thought is best for our footy club, both in 2026 and long-term. I’m pleased with the outcome, really pleased.

‘Taking some steam out of it’: Dons give Merrett space

By

Essendon are giving Zach Merrett some space, but expect he will comfortably fit back into the team when pre-season training begins.

Dons chief executive Craig Vozzo said the club was giving Merrett space following the emotions of the trade period before ‘reintegrating him’ into the club after he had publicly campaigned to leave.

“Taking emotion out of everything, I think that is important,” Vozzo told Trade Radio.

“The primary reason we wanted to keep Zach was because of his quality as a person and player.

Interesting choice of words as Hayward farewells Swans

Departing Swans star Will Hayward has paid tribute to former coach John Longmire on Instagram, but conspicuously made no mention of his successor Dean Cox.

Hayward started by thanking the Swans family, fans and staff for making the past nine years “some of the best moments of my life”.

“The club is full of great people from the top to the bottom,” he said.

“It was an absolute honour to play under Horse [Longmire] for such a long time and be led by some of the all time Swans greats.

Petracca opens up on Suns move

By

Norm Smith medallist Christian Petracca has spoken about his move to the Suns the day after Melbourne traded him to Gold Coast in a deal including three first-round picks.

The move marks a real changing of the guard for the Dees under new coach Steven King, with Petracca and fellow midfield ace Clayton Oliver both finding new homes.

“G’day, Suns fans – I just want to say that I’m super excited to be joining the Gold Coast family,” Petracca said in a video posted to the Suns’ social media.

“I can’t wait to get stuck into pre-season with all the boys, meet all the staff, and hopefully see some of you guys down at training.

“I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity – here’s to 2026 and beyond.”

Trades have set up Dees’ ‘next premiership’

By

Melbourne have traded two “hall of famers” but list manager Tim Lamb believes the Demons’ moves have set up “their next premiership win”.

Lamb echoed earlier calls thanking Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver for their stellar Melbourne careers which culminated in the club’s breakthrough premiership in 2021, calling them future hall of fame members. They were traded to Gold Coast and GWS respectively.

Lamb believes the draft picks and new players acquired during the trade period will soon have the Demons back among the contenders for the premiership.

The Demons snared Collingwood’s Brody Mihocek, St Kilda captain Jack Steele and teammate Max Heath, and Hawthorn’s Changkuoth Jiath but lost Charlie Spargo (North Melbourne) and Judd McVee (Fremantle).

Simpkin unlikely to return as skipper: Viney

By

North Melbourne football manager Todd Viney won’t pre-empt his club’s 2026 captaincy process, but he expects Jy Simpkin won’t remain in the role next season.

Simpkin sought a move to Collingwood but the Magpies wouldn’t meet North’s demands on their star midfielder so he remains at the Roos.

“It’s difficult, isn’t it? [Zach] Merrett’s going through the same thing at Essendon,” Viney told AFL Trade Radio on Thursday.

“Obviously, when you put yourself up and ask to have a look around, I think you put [the captaincy] in jeopardy. That’s pretty obvious.

“We have a process that we run through with the players and the coaches and the key people at the footy club so that will go again, but I think Jy would realistic enough to know that he’s put that in jeopardy and it would be unlikely [he would keep the captaincy].”
