That was the hard-fought contest. Every time you’ve seemed to kick away they kept coming back at you?
They showed add lot of character, not surprisingly. I haven’t watched all their four games this year. As I said, they were pretty lucky not to be four and zip. I knew it would be a good contest, a bit to play for. Really pleased that had we were able, after a bit of a shonky first quarter, find our mojo around the contest. And that’s what got us back into the game.
What did you make of Lachie’s performance after quarter-time?
The Brisbane Lions have rolled to their fourth win of the season, too strong for a gutsy Collingwood side which pushed their stronger opponents all the way, kicking the last three goals of the game with their frantic, run-and-gun style of football.
With less than three minutes to play, the Magpies were still in the contest, Jordan De Goey kicking his fourth goal – a check side from outside the boundary 40 metres out – to draw Collingwood within two goals. But the Lions bottled the play up from there to hold on by seven points.
Lions centreman Lachie Neale celebrated his 200th game in style, accumulating 33 possessions, while Hugh McCluggage and Dayne Zorko were almost as prolific. But it was in attack where the Lions enjoyed an advantage, Joe Daniher continuing his brilliant start to the season with four goals.
Age sports writer Damien Ractliffe has raised his concern about the Magpies’ tall line-up tonight which saw them select five players over 200cm for the first time in AFL/VFL history.
Darcy Cameron was a medical sub but kicked a goal early while Mason Cox only had a few touches. Tall line-ups in the AFL don’t have much history of success and it doesn’t look like all five of those talls will be together in the same side too many more times this season.
Lions defender Marcus Adams looks and sounds pretty happy with himself as he speaks about kicking his first AFL goals since 2017.
Adams kicked his first major as a Lion and his teammates mobbed him as he has only kicked four previous goals in his seven-season career.
Lions captain Dayne Zorko had tried to get a handball from Adams although the defender said Zorko claimed he was trying to set up the team’s zone defence.
“I tell him every week it is pretty easy to do so I had to put it through,” Adams joked.
The Lions have shown some great respect to Lachie Neale who was carried off on his teammates shoulders after his 200th game.
Neale had 33 possessions and a goal in this win and Fox Footy’s David King described Neale as the favourite for the Brownlow Medal so far.
Darcy Moore kicked a goal on the siren but the Lions will win this one by seven points.
Collingwood was gallant in the last term but left themselves too much work to do while Brisbane showed they are a good side but one with plenty of work to do to be up with the top contending sides.
Jordan De Goey kicked three of his four goals in the last term for the Mapgies while Joe Daniher kicked four goals for the Lions and Zac Bailey added three goals and 19 possessions.
Darcy Gardiner will face a potential suspension after running into Josh Daicos in the first term although he could only be fined depending on how the offence is graded.
Jordan De Goey has just kicked a classy goal from 50m out, on the right sideline.
He took a step in and kicked a banana type kick and it went for a goal.
Lions 97, Magpies 85 with two mins to go.
Jordan De Goey has kicked his third goal and cut the lead down again but it still looks like time will beat them.
They have asked a lot of questions of the Lions tonight and once Collingwood gets its line-up straight, it could be a dangerous side.
Lions 95, Magpies 79 with six mins to go.
Daniel McStay has followed Daniher’s goal with one of his own pushing deep into the forward line and taking a mark before converting his shot.
McStay has been very good yet again for the Lions. Someone will pay him well for his new contract at the end of the season.
