Good night

By Ronny Lerner

So there you have it. The day finished with one of the best games of the season and the Blues are now in a massive fight for their finals survival.

After snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, Melbourne are second on the ladder heading into Sunday, and they’re a chance of staying there if Sydney beat Collingwood tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Blues will probably slip to eighth tomorrow, assuming Richmond defeat Hawthorn at the MCG.

That means Carlton will take on arch rivals Collingwood next Sunday for a spot in the finals, in what is basically an elimination final for them.

And if the Bulldogs beat the Hawks next Sunday, the Blues will almost certainly have to beat the Pies to make the top eight.

‘It leaves you gutted’: Voss

By

Carlton coach Michael Voss spoke to the media after the game...

Q: Michael, how do you feel you lost it in the end?
A: A bit of detail. Lost a couple of minutes. Didn’t quite get right. So I guess it is easy to sort of focus on that two minutes. So it leaves you gutted. It leaves you disappointed. But I’m also really proud at the same time and I thought our players were really brave right throughout the whole night. Yes, it hurts. It hurts. Important game for us but we didn’t quite get it right at the end. But as far as the whole game goes, yes, I just thought the boys played really brave. Played a great style of football. You know, it is something that we want to keep replicating ... You find one extra mark, you win one extra contest. Some of the structure was there. But yes, just some of the detail we need to be able to finish off the game was...we didn’t get that right in the last two minutes. As a result, that affected the game. I understand that will be part of the conversation. I would rather it be a conversation around how we played throughout the game, as disappointed as we are, and walk away knowing that we can tidy up a couple of things in that space. I certainly don’t want that to be the conversation. Because the game itself was a high-pressure game, had a certain finals look about it and we brought a style of footy that really stacks up. So I am looking forward for us to do that again.
You need to bounce back really quickly now.

Q: You mentioned you are gutted and I imagine all the players are as well. How do you sort of pick everyone up again now?
A: We had a quick conversation about that after the game. We have got one game to really hone in on. We don’t need to talk about what the result of the outcome. It is effectively an elimination final, really. So we know what the week holds. Our challenge is to ensure that we get into our process again and we don’t worry too much about what is going on outside or the conversations that are happening on the outside. It is more for us to get back to work. We will review it pretty strongly or learn some things out of that game. There is plenty to take out of it, which we will. Then we will train and prepare and get back to work and we turn up here next Sunday in what will be a really big game. I’m sure it will be really built up.

Q: You have key players out particularly in the midfield. Do you know how those guys are sort of tracking ahead of next week as well? Do you expect to get some of those guys back?
A: Cerra pulled out late, just didn’t quite get going. Had a little tightness in his groin after
training on Thursday. Just couldn’t quite get going this morning. Opted for him not to play. I think that’s probably going to be about it. So, yes, Hewett is starting to get going a bit but I think the prognosis for him if he starts to train it might be more towards the finals more so than anything else, his availability.

Goodwin lauds Melbourne’s ‘enormous character’

By

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin spoke to the media after the game...

Q: How’s the heart rate?
A: Yes, it is coming down now. Oh, footy is a great game, isn’t it? Like it is full of emotion. It is the second week in a row that we have played in a finals-like game. The tackle pressure, the intensity around the ball, the defensive nature of the game. It is just a cracking game of footy. Our players have worked incredibly hard to continue to be in this situation and obviously tonight was an important night for us to win a close game of footy. We haven’t done that all year, really. To win a real close game and to show enormous character as a group. I think this is the type of win that this group can embody and continue to move forward.

Q: Is a win like that driving the emotions of this feeling?
A: I think they are important because you can draw on these experiences as you go forward. Yes, we have needed one of these experiences to be on the better end of. As I said, it was a great game of footy. Either team could have won. But in the end, this is the type of grit, the character that you need to show. We will grab hold of this, we will learn from it and we use the energy that we created tonight to propel us forward.

Q: What about Jake Melksham? From the outside he seems like an unlikely hero. How pleasing was that to see the way he has played tonight?
A: Yes, look, obviously he is a bit of a maligned player but he has worked incredibly hard. In his last month of footy for us, I think he has embodied a lot about our group. We have Jake Melksham who has been able to come in, not only played a role for us, he played on good players in the last month, Darcy Moore, Aliir Aliir. To impact the scoreboard, he has worked so hard to impact this team and he is getting what he deserves in the game. There is him and Jayden Hunt who have come in hand to fight and scrap their way into the team and they are playing to win and they are playing their role incredibly well. I’m really proud of both those guys.

Q: You obviously like that match-up with Weitering.
A: Look, he has been doing it for the last month. He has been doing it well. The thinking is we haven’t got Tom McDonald just to give us another aerial contest. He is a goalkicker. He grew up through the middle part of his career executing that role incredibly well and it is something we have drawn back on in the last six or seven weeks and he has embraced it.

Dockers triumph in wet Western Derby

Fremantle 3.4, 5.6, 7.14, 9.17 (71)
West Coast 4.0, 5.2, 6.3, 7.5 (47)

GOALS
Fremantle: Frederick 2, Walters 2, Serong, Darcy, Brayshaw, Acres, Schultz
West Coast: Waterman 2, Langdon, Dixon, Redden, O’Neill, Darling

DISPOSALS
Fremantle: Acres 29, Brodie 28, Mundy 25, Serong 25
West Coast: Duggan 30, Hurn 28

Meanwhile, out west, the Dockers were tested by their far inferior arch rivals, but they managed to pull clear in the second half.

In the end, the inaccurate Freo probably should’ve won by more than 24 points considering they doubled the Eagles for scoring shots 26-12.

‘This is everything to me’: Melksham desperate to win a flag

By

Melbourne’s four-goal hero Jake Melksham spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Congratulations on your win and also your performance.
A: Thank you. There is a lot of emotion down here at the moment. We were just talking off air either way, whatever way that went, it was massive for either team. For us to stick to tasks like we did at the end, we executed our win the game play. Kozzy kicks a great goal and we are standing here talking about how good it was. It was awesome.

Q: You talk about little things being enormous things. You are never quite sure what they are going to be. Gee, there are a lot of little moments tonight - I mean Phil Davis was talking about your body craft there. Just the smothers, the touches, the tap-ones, the little hand balls, they add up.
A: Yes, they do. It is actually what we focus on at the club. We have a match review each week and we are presented with a videotape of our smothering tackling. It is called ‘Tackle and Tough’. It is the one-percenters we drive. That has been a massive difference for us the last 18 months, the little things we focused on. We see that tape Monday. He gives out Precision Footy which is one of his footies he patented. It is great.

Q: It would be a pretty good tape to watch on Monday
A: Yes, it will be awesome. Back in defence was huge. They held up well for us all game. Mids great as usual and the forwards, we come good in the second half. I felt like in the first half we were too far away from the ball and they were cutting it off across halfback. We got that going in the second half and it went well.

Q: Angus talked about you felt like you were playing your game over the last few weeks, not getting reward. Can you tell us about what changed in the way in which you guys identified, “This is the style we want to play.“
A: I don’t think anything has changed in the style as much. Obviously we are going with a bit smaller forward line, hence myself being in. We have big Ben Brown down there and Max Gawn at times but it is our ability to just stick to task for the full 120 minutes. Like last week, we go down by a goal. Collingwood were just better for longer, they were cleaner, they
executed under pressure. That was a huge pressure cooker of a game last week and we just didn’t get it done. That’s what we focused on this week. It looked like with five minutes to go it was maybe heading that way again but like I said before, we execute our win-the-game play and we have a win.

Melbourne win ‘does our heads in’

How can the AFL claim that protecting the head is their priority when they keep throwing up finishes that do our heads in?

Pickett breaks Carlton hearts, leaves Blues clinging to finals dream

By Jon Pierik

Melbourne forward Kysaiah Pickett broke the hearts of Carlton supporters with a match-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining to strengthen the Demons’ hold on a top-four spot – and the double chance – while leaving the Blues desperately clinging to a September dream after a frantic five-point win at the MCG on Saturday night.

In a bruising clash that had all the emotion of a mini-final, the Demons were able to withstand the Blues’ heightened pressure, booting the final two goals of the game.

The Blues appeared in control when Charlie Curnow marked and converted with three minutes remaining but Jake Melksham, in arguably his best game as a Demon, responded with his fourth goal. The Blues attempted to ice the game but they could not control the ball for long enough, leading to a desperate Pickett snap from about 20 metres in front of goal.

Brayshaw praises Demons’ composure in frantic finish

By

Melbourne star Angus Brayshaw spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Q: Congratulations.
A: Thank you very much. Wow! What a game!

Q: That was an extraordinary game of football. Just take us through from the opening bounce to Kozzy’s goal. In fact, the 11 seconds that followed.
A: I mean, Carlton are an awesome contest team. We knew that going in and we expected it to be an arm wrestle game. There were ebbs and flows. But for the most part it was really even right up until the end. The last few weeks we have had some close and tight games and we haven’t won them. Taken a heap of learnings from that. Kozzy kicks a goal but there are so many individual moments that lead up to that that, we are calm, composed and we know exactly what the plan is and we have executed this time. That should build huge belief in our group.

Q: Simon Goodwin is quite a composed person but he showed real animation after the game with a few of those pictures. The whole team did reflect it when you were singing that song. It meant a lot to you this week.
A: You can see the passion of our entire group, how much it means to all of us. As I said, it has been a tough couple of weeks with some really tight results. I can speak for all our teammates and all the coaches. We are just committed to winning. It breaks our heart when we don’t. To come so close, to be playing the right way but not getting the results, I think when you get one that breaks you away, when you get a win tonight in a close game that is just a few weeks of built up emotion that has come out. I love it, awesome.

Q: Where were you with the Kozzy goal?
A: I can’t remember. I just remember being at the top of the 50 and sort of floating around...yes, I mean, it is a bloody good goal. I thought our talls brought it to the ground. We had awesome pressure. We have been doing that all day. Our coach has been stressing the last couple of weeks that our method has been there. We need to keep doing it and executing for longer time.
