An ex-tropical cyclone that smacked into the Queensland coast as a category 4 system has crossed the top of the nation and could re-intensify off WA’s north-west later this week.
The storm formerly known as Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently a tropical low sitting above the waters north of Wyndham, at the very edge of WA’s border with the Northern Territory.
It’s predicted to cross the tip of the Kimberley before re-intensifying to a category 1 tropical cyclone off the coast of Broome late on Tuesday.
However, the Bureau of Meteorology predicted there was a “high chance” the cyclone could strengthen to a category 3 system by late Wednesday, even reaching category 4 strength on Thursday as it traverses the waters off the Pilbara coast.
A severe weather warning is in place for parts of the Kimberley, including Kalumburu, with damaging winds and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding predicted.
A tropical cyclone advice warning is current for Beagle Bay to Kuri Bay.
Towns were evacuated as Narelle crossed the coast in Queensland early on Friday, leaving a monster clean-up which included a vessel being stranded in the Cape York Peninsula.
