Ex-tropical cyclone could re-intensify off WA’s northern coast

By Cameron Myles

An ex-tropical cyclone that smacked into the Queensland coast as a category 4 system has crossed the top of the nation and could re-intensify off WA’s north-west later this week.

The storm formerly known as Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently a tropical low sitting above the waters north of Wyndham, at the very edge of WA’s border with the Northern Territory.

It’s predicted to cross the tip of the Kimberley before re-intensifying to a category 1 tropical cyclone off the coast of Broome late on Tuesday.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology predicted there was a “high chance” the cyclone could strengthen to a category 3 system by late Wednesday, even reaching category 4 strength on Thursday as it traverses the waters off the Pilbara coast.

A severe weather warning is in place for parts of the Kimberley, including Kalumburu, with damaging winds and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding predicted.

A tropical cyclone advice warning is current for Beagle Bay to Kuri Bay.

Towns were evacuated as Narelle crossed the coast in Queensland early on Friday, leaving a monster clean-up which included a vessel being stranded in the Cape York Peninsula.

‘Serious incident’ reported at Armadale fuel station

By

Armadale Detectives are investigating a serious incident at a service station in Armadale on Monday.

About 1pm, a male driving a dark-coloured sedan attended the service station and filled up his vehicle, before attempting to leave without paying.

As the vehicle was attempting to leave, a male service station attendant attempted to stop the vehicle before being struck and injured.

According to WA Police, the attendant sustained serious facial injuries and was conveyed by St John’s Ambulance to hospital.

“The male and the vehicle remain outstanding at this time,” WA Police said in a statement.

“Anyone who was in the area at the time or has observed a dark-coloured sedan with damage to the windscreen and bonnet is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.”

Major boost for WA’s Green after historic triple treat

By Murray Wenzel

Perth-born Hannah Green will return to the United States confident she can hold her nerve when next in major contention after rewriting Australian golfing history.

The world No.7 overcame some erratic play to complete a dominant four-stroke victory and sit alone at 16 under on Sunday at the Australian WPGA Championship on the Gold Coast.

Green’s Sanctuary Cove salute followed an Australian Open breakthrough and victory at Singapore’s Women’s World Championship - her seventh LPGA title - in her previous two starts.

In doing so, she became the first Australian golfer to complete a hat-trick of titles in major-tour, global events - and all with husband and fellow pro Jarryd Felton as caddie.

Cook congratulates SA premier on election win

By

WA Premier Roger Cook has compared his government to that of re-elected South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, calling the election result “devastating” for the local Liberal and National parties.

Malinauskas claimed a commanding second-term victory in South Australia over the weekend, using a landslide result to call for a more generous and inclusive politics even as a surging One Nation carved deeply into the major parties’ vote.

At a press conference on Monday morning, Cook took the opportunity to congratulate the South Australian premier on his victory.

“He’s run a great government, a good government, and a government which talks about the issues which matter to people,” Cook said.

Eagles defender set for concussion break

By Justin Chadwick

West Coast defender Harry Edwards is set for an extended stint on the sidelines as he deals with the latest concussion of his stop-start AFL career.

Edwards was concussed in the opening quarter of Sunday’s 17-point win over North Melbourne when he copped an accidental arm to the head from teammate Matt Flynn in a marking contest.

Although the contact appeared to only be a glancing blow, Edwards slumped to the turf and looked groggy as he tried to regain his composure while on all fours.

Edwards eventually got up and tried to wave away the trainers, but soon slumped back to the turf.

Two rushed to hospital after Wundowie crash

By

We’ve got more information now on the crash in Wundowie we covered earlier.

WA Police say two people have been taken to Royal Perth Hospital – one of whom was airlifted from the scene – after the crash on Great Eastern Highway about 6.15am this morning.

A witness who called in to 6PR this morning described one of the vehicles as a Commodore, however the crash actually involved a blue Toyota Camry sedan and white Kia Cerato hatchback.

The 46-year-old woman driving the Kia was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, while the 21-year-old woman driving the Toyota was taken to the same hospital by St John Ambulance, also with serious injuries.

Major crash investigators are examining the scene and have appealed for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or make a report online.

WA star’s dream run continues at Miami Open

By Ian Chadband

Western Australia’s Talia Gibson shows no sign of waking from her American dream run as the red-hot Australian downed yet another top-20 victim at the Miami Open.

A day after sending four-time grand slam champ Naomi Osaka packing, the 21-year-old has outclassed one of the sport’s brightest new talents, teenage world No.17 Iva Jovic, 6-2 6-2 on Sunday.

It was Gibson’s fifth victory over a top-20 player in just three weeks as she followed up her brilliant run to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells by reaching the last-16 in the second leg of the “Sunshine swing” in the US.

There’s no sign of the Perth prospect letting up either as she produced an immaculate display of serving, not getting broken once and not even giving up a break point opportunity as she dispatched the 18-year-old American Jovic in just 72 minutes.

Last day to catch Sculpture by the Sea

By

The famed beachside exhibition Sculpture by the Sea is drawing to a close, with today being the last day Cottesloe visitors can take in the artworks.

Sydney artist Tim Storrier was announced as the winner of the $5000 EY People’s Choice Award yesterday for his sculpture Emperor of the Abrolhos – a stainless-steel pelican polished to a mirror finish that captures the light and surrounding coast.

It is the first time Storrier has entered Sculpture by the Sea, with his previous works exhibited in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and at The Louvre, in Paris.

“The Emperor of the Abrolhos is a trophy to celebrate the ridiculous beauty of one of nature’s heroic guardians,” Storrier said.

‘Horrific’ crash closes Great Eastern Highway

By

A high-speed crash east of Perth has closed Great Eastern Highway in both directions.

The crash happened between Chedaring Road and Inkpen Road about 6am this morning, with a caller to Radio 6PR saying the scene was “absolutely horrific”.

Rob, who did not give his last name, told the station the accident appeared to be a head-on crash between a Holden Commodore ute and a white car, and happened about 500 metres west of the Wundowie turnoff.

“The amount of damage to both cars, they both were travelling at a good speed, it’s 110km/h here,” he said.

Emergency services are on the scene, and Main Roads WA warned traffic was heavy in the area, urging drivers to take an alternate route.

More to come.
