Homicide squad investigating woman’s death at Footscray brothel

Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death of a woman at a brothel in Melbourne’s inner west.

Police were called to a property on Cowper Street in Footscray for a welfare check just after 8pm on Friday.

A woman, who is yet to be identified, was found dead at the scene.

“Detectives are making enquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and investigations remain ongoing,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

People working at nearby businesses confirmed to The Age that the building housed a brothel.

The house where the woman’s body was discovered is in an industrial area, with businesses on the street transporting seafood, produce and flowers.

One man working in the area, who did not want to be named, said he was very saddened and “overwhelmed” by the death.

Forensic investigators were seen entering the house with equipment and paper bags late on Saturday morning, before taking photographs of the front of the premises.

A large SES tent was erected on the street outside the property.

Police are also investigating an incident in South Melbourne, where a man was found with injuries at a property on Iffla Street about 7.30pm Friday.

The man, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene. The circumstances of his death are still unknown.
