The February 14 edition

This is not a Valentine’s Day edition, but we have used February 14 as an excuse to explore matters of the heart. Stephanie Wood’s cover story looks at the reinventing of modern relationships in what she describes as “a revolution in how heterosexual women in midlife are thinking about love, relationships, men and living arrangements”. We also couldn’t resist the opportunity for our cover to be part of the zeitgeist with the release of the much-anticipated Wuthering Heights. On the topic of reinvention, I am hard-pressed to think of another occupation where the end can be so abrupt – and public – as being voted out of your job at a federal election. Former Greens leader Adam Bandt went through this bruising experience last year, losing his seat and the party leadership while presiding over the Greens’ rout in the lower house. As he says: “I was gutted.” Bandt has now emerged from that dark period with a new role, a new energy and a new lease on life. Melissa Fyfe speaks with him about his hope to build a people-powered environmental movement as the CEO of the Australian Conservation Foundation. – Melissa Stevens, editor
