What made COVID-19 news today?
- Victoria recorded 76 new COVID-19 cases, while NSW has recorded nine and Queensland eight. Sadly, Australia's death toll increased to 781 after 11 more Victorians lost their lives to the virus.
- Melbourne's 14-day average dropped to 74.5, down from 78.6 on Tuesday and 84.8 on Monday. Under the state's government roadmap, the Melbourne region will be able to move to its next step of reopening on September 28 if the 14-day average for new cases is between 30 and 50.
- There are still 92 active aged care outbreaks that are responsible for 50 per cent of all active cases in Victoria. A full list of aged care outbreaks has finally been made public.
- Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and Oxford University put a hold on the late-stage trial of their highly-anticipated COVID-19 vaccine candidate after a suspected serious adverse reaction in a study participant in the UK. But both Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Coatsworth and Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt have reassured Australians this is a normal part of vaccine trials.
A COVID-19 cluster linked to Sydney's Concord and Liverpool hospitals has ballooned to 12 cases after five more people connected to the outbreak were diagnosed with the virus. Nine new cases were recorded in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday, including a mystery case from south-eastern Sydney and one returned traveller.
- The fierce border stoush between NSW and Queensland continues, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also under fire in her own Parliament. NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has described the Queensland government’s border policy as "base, loopy politics" and says he’s appalled at the way it’s separating families.
