A ring of deception

His mother had called him “useless” five times by the time Ollie saw her engagement ring on the bathroom vanity.

He decided to pocket it – then forgot about it until later, when he heard her wailing, “Anyone seen my ring? It’s disappeared!”

As she got increasingly fraught, they turned over the house, his dad dismantling the S-bend and pulling hairy gunk from drains.

All seemed lost until Ollie appeared before his mother with the ring held triumphantly aloft. “Found it!”

She rewarded him with a hug of such warmth that it made the questioning and recriminations that followed well worthwhile.
