Gail always figured that when Gordon’s midlife crisis came about, it would involve some form of glamour, however misjudged.

A trophy girlfriend half his age, a sports car twice his annual wage, a carbon-fibre racing bike considered all the rage.

Instead, Gordon bought himself a rain gauge for the backyard and kept meticulous records.

Moreover, he developed an abiding interest in World War II, the rollicking, seafaring novels of Patrick O’Brian and obscure council by-laws which he liked to talk about. Usually in bed.

There were times Gail wished he was having an affair instead.
