Around 2000 pro-Palestinian protesters march in Melbourne

By Rachael Dexter

At least 2000 pro-Palestinian supporters marched through the streets of Melbourne’s CBD on Tuesday night under the watch of dozens of police, as several speakers called out what they termed “Western hypocrisy” over the treatment of Palestinian people by the state of Israel and Palestine’s right to defend itself by “any means necessary”.

The snap after-work rally, organised by the group ‘Free Palestine Melbourne’ attracted young and old - including school children in uniforms - and heard from a number of activists including Jewish woman Dr Jordy Silverstein from a group called ‘Loud Jew collective’.

“I’m the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors raised on stories of suffering genocide, trauma and loss and I refuse to be part of a culture and politics that says that it is okay to perpetrate these harms on another people,” she told the crowd.

Silverstein said that she and “many other Jews” supported the Palestinian people and were outraged by the lighting up of public landmarks like the National Gallery of Victoria

UN says 187,000 Gazans uprooted

By Latika Bourke

The UN’s Humanitarian Office said Israel’s retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip have already displaced 187,000 Palestinians.

And the UN’s Children’s Agency has said hundreds of children, Palestinian and Israeli, have been killed and many more injured in the fighting.

Israel has been issuing warnings to civilians, telling them they are being used as human shields by Hamas and should leave. Hamas has warned it will kill hostages every time civilians are bombed without warning.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) has released videos of its airstrikes pulverising buildings, meaning as the retaliatory campaign intensifies, there will be fewer places for civilians to try and shelter.

NSW Minister defends decision to allow pro-Palestinian protest

By Michael Koziol

NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley says she doesn’t want to see protests “from anyone” but won’t preempt a police decision about another planned pro-Palestinian rally in Sydney this weekend.

Scenes from the pro-Palestinian protest at the Sydney Opera House.

Catley defended a police decision to manage Monday night’s protest rather than try to shut it down, and refused to say whether permission should be granted for a second demonstration planned for Sunday afternoon.

“None of us want to see this,” she told 2GB radio.

“I don’t want to see protests on our street at all, from anybody. I don’t think anybody really does.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday “the Zionist regime” faced a military and intelligence defeat beyond repair when Hamas breached Israel’s defences over the weekend.

“We kiss the hands of those who planned the attack on the Zionist regime,” Khamenei said, according to a translation by Reuters.
