Prince Philip death latest updates: The Duke of Edinburgh dies aged 99

Philip died at Windsor Castle on Friday at the age of 99, with the Queen reportedly by his side, after being released from hospital several weeks ago. He had been married to the Queen for 73 years.

Tributes have flowed from around the world – from heads of state, politicians, celebrities, and members of the royal family, including Philip’s children Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, and his grandson Prince Harry.

A 21-gun salute is expected to take place in Canberra, with those wishing to express their condolences able to do so online.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast and politicians around the world have given tributes after the death of Prince Philip at the age of 99.

On the front pages of British newspapers, his death was described as a “deep sorrow” after a lifetime of devotion.

If not for a small, faded and rather anonymous metal plaque, framed and almost concealed by foliage, visitors would likely remain oblivious to the fact that this so-called palace was the birthplace of the spouse of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

In English, as well as in Greek, the plaque reads: “Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born here in 1921.”

Mon Repos Palace, on the Greek island of Corfu, is reached by a long, shaded driveway flanked by gardens that meanders its slightly steep path towards the mansion.

It was built in 1826 by Frederick Adams, the then British commissioner, as a gift to his spouse Nina Palatianous, during the almost four-decade-long era when Corfu was a protectorate of Britain due to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon.

Prince Philip’s four children have revealed how they will best remember their father in a new heartfelt tribute aired as the grieving royal family rework plans for his funeral.

The Duke of Edinburgh died at Windsor Castle on Friday, nearly three weeks after being discharged from a London hospital following treatment for an infection and heart condition.

In an interview recorded for broadcast after Philip’s death, Prince Charles said his father “didn’t suffer fools gladly” and would “probably want to be remembered as an individual in his own right”.

“His energy was astonishing in supporting my mama, and doing it in such a long time,” Charles said. “What he’s done amounts to an astonishing achievement, I think.”

Australia’s former Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, says Prince Philip was “absolutely besotted with this nation” and resonated in Australia because of his directness.

He said today is a sad day, and also a day for celebrating a great life.

Sir Peter, the former head of the Australian Defence Force, said the first time he met Philip was in 1985, at a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

“He loved the idea of talking to people in uniform because, if you like, that was part of his nature,” Sir Peter said on the Today Show.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a 41-gun salute will be held in Canberra today to mark the death of Prince Philip.

At a press conference on Saturday, Morrison said the Duke of Edinburgh visited Australia many times and left his mark, including comforting bushfire victims.

“There are many towering figures that the world has lost and known, but few have been before us in our lifetimes for such a long time. His presence and service a reassurance; a reminder of the stability we so often need in a world that can be so uncertain,” Morrison said.

“With his passing, we say farewell to another of the greatest generation.”
