Reaching for the record books, Kyrgios and Tomljanovic have become the first Australian male and female pair to make the US Open quarter-finals in the same year since Pat Cash and Wendy Turnbull in 1984.

It’s a big story, and clearly, one magistrate thought the same thing in court today, as per AAP reporter Karen Sweeney.

Meanwhile, ESPN seems pretty pumped about the result. Caps lock and all.

The thing that makes the Kyrgios win even more remarkable

By

Beating Medvedev is a massive achievement in itself – Kyrgios will be chuffed to have exacted revenge after his second-round defeat earlier this year to the Russian at the Australian Open – but don’t forget that Australia’s best singles player is also dabbling in doubles at the US Open.

The player who Kyrgios defeated in the first round was in his box today. You guessed it, Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The pair are aiming to emulate their victory at the Australian Open this year when they continue their doubles campaign tomorrow.

Instead of a freshen-up before a quarter-final, Kyrgios will team up with his great mate in a fourth-round match against Lloyd Glasspool from Great Britain and Harri Heliövaara from Finland.

Perhaps the doubles is keeping Kyrgios sharp for his singles.

Medvedev didn’t appreciate comment from Kyrgios camp during match

“Somebody from his box was like, ‘Come on, get him, man’. That’s not nice.”

Not a major deal, as Medvedev explains in the video below, but the Russian wasn’t pleased when someone from the Kyrgios team yelled something out before he was about to take a second serve.

The bottom line is Medvedev was completely outclassed.

Take a look at this if you haven’t already.

Medvedev fluffs a shot and instead of letting it bounce out, Kyrgios runs to the other side of the court and hits a winner.

One problem: You can’t do that.

How Kyrgios wrapped up match over Medvedev

Nick Kyrgios downed world number one Daniil Medvedev 7-6(11) 3-6 6-3 6-2 in an absorbing battle on Monday (AEST) to reach the US Open quarter-finals and end the Russian’s hopes for a title defence in New York.

With the loss to the Australian, there will be a new world number one when rankings are released after the year’s final Grand Slam.

This is the first time Kyrgios, 27, has reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

It also extends the recent run of high-level play for the 23rd-seed, who reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July.

In a meeting worthy of a Broadway show between two of the game’s biggest servers and most combustible personalities, it was Kyrgios who was the better in the match’s biggest moments, showing off a renewed focus and fitness. He outplayed Medvedev with the help of 21 aces.
