Thanks for those who followed our blog.

In case you missed it, Nick Kyrgios is into the semi-finals at Wimbledon after a straight-sets win over Cristian Garin.

Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic was unfortauntely bundled out of the grand slam earlier tonight.

If you’re staying up, be sure to tune into the Taylor Fritz v Rafael Nadal battle. It would be no surprise to see Nadal take this to a fifth set, which would make it a long night!

The winner will meet Nick Kyrgios in the semi-finals.

Good night.

By Darren Walton and Scott Spits

London: Nick Kyrgios has cast aside his domestic dramas to rant and rave his way into the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.

“I just never thought I’d be at a semi-finals of a grand slam. I thought my ship had sailed,” an emotional Kyrgios said after taking several minutes in his courtside chair to soak in the moment.

Kyrgios had too much firepower for Cristian Garin, eliminating the unseeded Chilean 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 13 minutes on Wednesday - barely 24 hours after being summoned to a Canberra court over an assault allegation.

Career PB for Kyrgios

By

Never has Nick Kyrgios reached the semi-finals of a grand slam.

Only twice before this tournament had he reached the quarter-finals of a major. First in 2014 at Wimbledon, then in 2015 at the Australian Open.

It feels like he’s been so successful without claiming the ultimate. Since the start of 2019, he had only reached the fourth round of a major once before this tournament.

But he’s coming of age.

Around the courts: Fritz leads Nadal, 2-1

Two sets to one in Taylor Fritz’ favour, but Rafael Nadal leads a break in the fourth set.

This game is headed towards five sets, and Nick Kyrgios will be happy to see these two starts go to war while he puts his feet up following a straight-sets win.

Nadal is serving to move 4-2 up in the fourth set.

Score: 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 3-2 (Nadal-Fritz)

Nick Kyrgios speaks post-match

By

Q: Well, Nick, huge congratulations. It feels like it has been such a long time coming, but you are through to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam and here at Wimbledon. How good does that feel?

A: An amazing atmosphere out here again. I just never thought I would be at a semi-final of a Grand Slam. Honestly, I thought my ship had sailed. Obviously, I didn’t go about things great earlier in my career and I may have wasted that little window but really proud of the way I have just come back out here with my team and been able to put on a performance.

Q: That is an interesting point, Nick because you do things your own way because you don’t have a permanent coach. That might be an idea, a wrong idea, that these days these occasions don’t matter to you, but it matters to you a lot, doesn’t it?

A: Definitely. I don’t have a coach. I would never put that burden on someone. But each and every one of my team plays a very important role. I feel like no-one knows my tennis better than I do. I have been playing this sports since I was seven. To reach a semi-final of a Grand Slam, I’m pretty happy.

Q: Nick, that was an incredibly measured, controlled performance, straight sets. What pleased you most about how you controlled things out here today?

REPLAY POINT! On match point! Then Kyrgios wins!

By

Wow, what a finish.

Garin serves, and Kyrgios gets in a rally. A ball goes deep and the linesman calls it out, but the chair umpire immediately over-rules and says Kyrgios’ ball was in.

He calls for the point to be replayed, as Kyrgios yells at the linesman, “what are you doing?”

But no damage done, the next point, Garin hits an unforced error and Kyrgios wins the tiebreak, 7-5.

KYRGIOS IS INTO THE SEMI FINALS!

He wins 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). And Kyrgios is certainly emotional following that win. He reaches the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

Mini-breaks galore

By

Kyrgios got a mini-break again, to go up 3-1.

Garin then held at 3-2, broke back twice following back-to-back forehand unforced errors from Kyrgios, to move to 3-4, and held to 3-5.

Then Kyrgios broke back, to make it 4-5, and held his first serve at 5-5.

His next serve hits the net. The second serve goes down the tee, a brilliant rally, Kyrgios comes to the net, keeps two in play that are hit straight at him, and the third hits the net.

6-5. He has match point, Garin has two serves.

Kyrgios gets mini-break, then coughs it up

By

Very early there’s a mini-break to Kyrgios. A beautiful drop shot gets him the first point. 1-0.

He then serves, and Garin’s return goes long. 2-0.

Kyrgios serves again, down the middle, but it hits the net and goes long. Second serve was also called out. Kyrgios challenges, and it’s out, by millimetres. Kyrgios could have slowed down his second serve, but he went big again. 2-1.
