Tien speaks about nose bleeds, momentum shifts

By Roy Ward

American quarterfinalist Learner Tien believes the dry conditions on court contribution to the blood nose that struck him down early in his match with Daniil Medvedev.

Tien needed a medical time out to get it under control and managed to return to the court and beat the 2021 US Open winner in straight sets.

No Learner any more, Tien belts Medvedev in straight sets

By Michael Gleeson

This wasn’t an upset, this was a belting.

Daniil Medvedev the 2021 US Open winner and 11th seed here was humbled by American Leaner Tien losing in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, 6-3.

Tien was a 19-year-old qualifier when he caused one of the surprises of the tournament last year by beating Medvedev over five sets in the second round.

A year later, the fact that the now 20-year-old beat Medvedev was no longer a surprise for a player now ranked 29 in the world. Clearly he is now a learner in name only.

Demon’s opponent thinks he is close to a ‘slam winner’

By Marc McGowan

Alex de Minaur’s beaten foe, Alexander Bublik, was complimentary about the Australian’s performance on Sunday night, but added that he struggled with the slower conditions on Rod Laver Arena compared to Margaret Court Arena, where he has mostly played this tournament.

“It’s tough to say [if de Minaur has gone to a new level] because I guess the next level for someone like Alex would be nearly slam winner, so we have to see that with the results of Australian Open and further slams that we have,” Bublik said.

“But I think he played a great match today. Conditions were not really fitting me. I played all the matches on Margaret, so it was quite fast out there.

“On Rod Laver [Arena] today, it was quite a bit slow. I mean, it was my fault, I didn’t adjust to the conditions as fast as I usually would do.

“That’s tennis. He played a great match [and] he deserved to win. Definitely, he was the better player today, so I’m just going to take everything that’s possible from this match to grow and to get back to the stage stronger.”

Svitolina wins first set

By

Elina Svitolina is all business tonight taking a 6-2 win in the first set against Mirra Andreeva.

The Ukrainian No.12 seed has been far too collected and consistent for the No.8 seeded Russian, and she was especially aggressive against Andreeva’s second serves in the last game of the set.

Andreeva fought off two set points but couldn’t win the last one.
