Sabalenka’s brutal honesty following loss

By Roy Ward

Aryna Sabalenka was laughing on the outside but hurting on the inside as she began to process her three-set loss in the Australian Open final tonight.

Sabalenka was giggling and making jokes during her press conference, with the highlight an interaction with her coaches, when she was asked when she would address the loss with them.

“I don’t know,” Sabalenka said before looking towards her coaches, who were waiting off camera.

“When? Today?

“Oh, f--- you, no [laughter]. Maybe in a week [laughter].

“Or maybe in few days. Whenever I feel like, OK, I can move on from this one.”

When asked about her emotions, Sabalenka admitted it was a mixed bag.

“I was laughing and crying,” she said.

“It was a hysterical moment, but nothing really productive from that conversation… Just let everything go out and try to... I was really upset with myself, I would say, because once again, I had opportunities. I played great until a certain point, and then I couldn’t resist that aggression that she had on court today.

“I was just really upset with myself, but I think overall I played great tennis here in Australia. Even in this final I feel like I played great. I was fighting. I did my best, and today she was a better player.

“So, I don’t know. We’ll speak with the team. Now they try to avoid and escape me because they see that it’s not really healthy to be around me right now.”

She laughed after that line too. But there was no joy in that laughter at all.

‘Different feelings’ for Rybakina after Aus Open win

By Roy Ward

Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina is embracing the joy of winning her second grand slam title, but she admits her win at Melbourne Park feels much different to her maiden title at Wimbledon in 2022.

“It is different feelings, I will say, because, Wimbledon was my first experience getting that far in the tournament, and I won straight away,” Rybakina said.

Delta Goodrem is all about the finals

By Cara Waters

It was good to see pop star Delta Goodrem front and centre watching the women’s final at Rod Laver Arena.

We were worried the ambassador for champagne house Piper-Heidsieck was taking a work-from-home approach to her role, appearing on opening night then not again until Friday.

Goodrem was in Piper’s on court seats on Friday for the marathon men’s semi-final, and now she’s back again tonight in the exclusive O lounge to cheer the women on.

We take it all back, Delta.

Rybakina on serving for the match

By

Elena Rybakina was asked by Nine about how she felt as she served for the title, and this was her answer:

“The heart rate definitely was beating too fast... Maybe [my] face didn’t show [it]. But inside was a lot. It was an opportunity to close the match, and [my] serve is most of the time helping me. But when it’s such a moment, it was not easy. But I knew that was the only advantage I have in this moment. So I had to serve it out and, yeah, I’m just super happy.”

“It’s hard to find words now, but I want to congratulate Aryna for her amazing results for a couple of years and I know it’s tough, but I just hope that we’re going to play many more finals together. And congrats to your team for all the improvements. A great job you’ve done. I want to say thank you, to you guys [the crowd] for such an incredible atmosphere. It was a battle and, honestly, your support kept us going. And thank you so much to Kazakhstan.

“I felt the support from that corner a lot and thank you everyone who made this tournament possible. Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, for making us feel so well here. And it’s a really ‘happy slam’ and I always enjoy coming here and playing in front of you guys.

“I would like to say thank you to my team. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible really. We had a lot of things going on and I’m really glad that we achieved this result. And thank you to all of you.

“Hopefully, we can keep on going strong this year. I would like to say thank you to the medical team here. You are always doing a great job. I want to say thank you to my sponsors and also the president of our tennis federation. We had a few other matches with Kazakhstan players, and I’m really proud. And yeah, hopefully we can continue doing a great job.”

A gracious speech from Sabalenka

By

A defeated Aryna Sabalenka has shown plenty of grace to praise Elena Rybakina and the organisers of the tournament, despite her heartbreaking defeat tonight.

Sabalenka has done this well in the past and wants to come back and win another Australian Open next year.

“I’m really speechless right now. I’ll try not to forget anything. I want to start with Elena. I want to congratulate you on an incredible run. Incredible tennis. Congrats to you and your team on such an incredible achievement. Thank you everyone who made this tournament possible.

“I love being here. I love playing in front of you all. You guys are [an] incredible support. I always looking forward to come and play in front of you and well, let’s hope maybe next year is going to be a better year for me.
