Good evening

By Ronny Lerner

So there we have it. An unforgettable night at Melbourne Park comes to an end.

The evening kicked off with the women’s final which ended up being an absolute classic.

Both Rybakina and Sabalenka were absolutely brilliant, but there could only be one winner, and that was Sabalenka who triumphed in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and 28 minutes.

It was an extra special victory for Sabalenka who broke through for her maiden grand slam title after making it to the semi-final stage on three other occasions.

But the action didn’t stop there, because Aussie duo Hijikata and Kubler capped off the night by becoming men’s doubles champions with a straight-sets win over Monaco’s Hugo Nys and Poland’s Jan Zielinski 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in 83 minutes.

Hijikata and Kubler followed in the footsteps of Kyrgios and Kokkinakis last year to make it back-to-back Australian titles in the men’s doubles.

Thanks for tuning into our blog tonight, make sure you join us tomorrow for the Australian Open’s crescendo when Novak Djokovic and Stefans Tsitsipas do battle in the men’s final.

‘The best day of my life’: Sabalenka

By

Aryna Sabalenka spoke to the media after winning the 2023 Australian Open women’s final...

Q: Aryna, Grand Slam champion. Talk us through the emotions you’re feeling right now.
A: I don’t know. It’s tough to explain what I’m feeling right now. Oh, I just super happy. Super happy. Proud. I don’t know how to explain. Just the best -- is the best day of my life right now.

Q: Can you try and explain how you were feeling in that final game, and in particular when you hit the double-fault on the first championship point?
A: Well, it was a good start for me. I was like, ‘Well, it’s going to be fun after the double-fault
(laughter)’. The last game, yeah, of course I was a little bit nervous. I was keep telling myself like, ’Nobody tells you that it’s going to be easy, you just have to work for it, work for it till the last point. Yeah, there was a tough game. I’m super happy that I was able to handle all those emotions and win this one.

Q: The fact that this hasn’t come easy at all, does that make this sweeter?
A: Yeah, I think it’s even more enjoyable, I would say, after all those tough matches. I really feel right now that I really needed those tough losses to kind of understand myself a little bit better. It was like a preparation, you know, for me. I actually feel happy that I lost those matches, so right now I can be a different player and just different Aryna, you know?

Q: Given the circumstance, the biggest moment of your career to date, is that the best match you’ve ever produced?
A: Yeah, I think it’s really the best match, I would say it was. She played an unbelievable tennis. I fought so hard to win this one. I think tennis was great. I’m really happy that it wasn’t easy match. I really enjoyed this battle.

Wildcards pull off dream grand slam doubles heist

By Scott Spits

Australia’s dynamic duo Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata have followed in the footsteps of the Woodies and the country’s ‘Special K’ combination one year ago by charging to the 2023 Australian Open men’s doubles title.

In the space of 12 months Australia’s tennis stocks have spiked. And some of the profits have come from an unexpected source - doubles pairings who gel and thrive in the big events.

Kubler and Hijikata, who had never played a tournament together, defeated Hugo Nys, of Monaco, and Jan Zielinski, of Poland.

Hijikata and Kubler complete the fairytale

By Ronny Lerner

What a performance by Hijikata and Kubler. They had never played together prior to this tournament and earned a wildcard into the event.

But here they are now, Australian Open men’s doubles champions for 2023 - incredible stuff.

Despite Nys and Zielinski more than doubling them for aces (10-4), the Aussies had a better percentage of first serves that went in (72-62) and also won a greater percentage of points on first serve (88-82) and second serve (65-50).

The Monacan and the Pole actually combined for more winners (22-19), but they also committed more unforced errors (3-1) as the Aussies ended up winning more points (68-55).

Hijikata and Kubler also brought up the sole break point of the entire match, which they converted in the third game.
