Thanks so much for joining us today and tonight, that’s all we have for you for now but we will be back again on Sunday morning with more Australian Open coverage as we had day seven and the start of the business end of this event.
Alex de Minaur barged into the fourth round with a straight sets win tonight while fellow Aussies Maddison Inglis and Chris O’Connell saw their wildcard runs come to a sad but promising end.
Tennis legend Rod Laver made his annual appearance and offered some wisdom on Ash Barty, crowds and other issues while big crowds returned for the middle Saturday of the tournament.
Barty will be on court tomorrow night at 7pm as she strives to win her way into the quarterfinals while Rafael Nadal, Alexander Zverev and Victoria Azarenka will be among the stars on court.
“Super Saturday” went close to resembling Australian Opens of old as thousands of spectators converged on Melbourne Park for the all-popular middle weekend of the tennis extravaganza.
This year’s Australian Open is hardly untouched by the COVID-19 pandemic but the scenes and mood in the precinct were in sharp contrast to the reality of 11 months ago when Super Saturday became Silent Saturday thanks to the first day of a snap five-day lockdown in Victoria falling in the middle of the two-week major.
While matches were played out in crowdless stadiums on the equivalent Saturday last February, passionate tennis fans mixed with theatre goers on Saturday, all different types doing everything possible to avoid the sharp bite of the Melbourne sun.
At least 40,000 fans may have made their way to Melbourne Park, some keeping a keen eye on wildcards Maddison Inglis and Christopher O’Connell, two local players trying to create lifetime memories searching for a berth in the final 16 at their home grand slam event.
Alex de Minaur spoke with Channel Nine’s Jim Courier after his win tonight:
Alex, that was a terrific performance, straight sets, it could look straightforward but we know it’s always more complicated than what. What was working well for you tonight?
Pablo is always a veteran and always tough? Pretty exciting to play here at Rod Laver Arena at 7pm in front of the great Rod Laver himself. So it’s a pretty amazing feeling and I got the win, what more can I ask for?
It is your second consecutive win here at Rod Laver Arena. Are you getting comfortable?
Alex de Minaur is into the fourth round at the Australian Open after a straight sets win over Spain’s Pablo Andujar at Rod Laver Arena.
With the great Rod Laver watching on, de Minaur dominated his opponent who couldn’t find a way past his array of baseline shots, nor avoid unforced errors of his own as de Minaur scored a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win.
Andujar took his loss in good spirits even celebrating a point against de Minaur’s serve in the final game of the match.
de Minaur will face Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the next round.
Australia’s Alex de Minaur will be serving for the match when he and Pablo Andujar return to the court.
de Minaur earned two break points and he took the game with his second one as Andujar again hit wide of the line, he leads 6-4, 6-4, 5-2.
Alex de Minaur has the break in the third set and is now serving to extend his lead with a 6-4, 6-4, 3-2 scoreline.
Andujar is fading quickly and just can’t find a way past the scrappy defensive returns of the Australian.
No.9 seed Iga Swiatek has earned her place in the last 16 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Daria Kasatkina tonight.
Swiatek was in command throughout the match against her Russian opponent with the Polish star powering away from the baseline to setup her victory and her sixth consecutive appearance in the second week of a grand slam.
de Minaur is up two sets to love after winning the second set in 44 minutes, he leads 6-4, 6-4.
The Australian is both setting up more winners and making far fewer unforced errors than the Spanish player who has struggled to find a way to get the best of de Minaur.
Now we can see how far de Minaur has matured as this set is a chance to win in straight sets and show how ruthless he can be or possibly open the way to a longer four or five set marathon.
Can he take care of business? Time will tell.
Pablo Andujar was clapping with his racquet in respect of that perfect lob from Alex de Minaur, which came from well beyond the baseline, flew over Andujar and landed right on the line to give the Australian a break point.
It was not enough to seal the break though - Andujar holds to keep it 5-4 with de Minaur serving for the set.
Alex de Minaur is looking composed and assured in this second set as he continues to attack Andujar in an attempt to get another break.
de Minaur leads 6-4, 4-2 as he closes in on a two sets to love lead in this third round match.
