Match report: Tim's time as a Socceroo up as Boyle strikes twice
By Vince Rugari
To think Prime Minister Scott Morrison wants to reduce our intake of migrants. Martin Boyle only just received his Australian passport but already looks like one of the country's best-attacking weapons after taking Tuesday night's friendly against Lebanon by the scruff of the neck.
The Socceroos prevailed 3-0 at ANZ Stadium to send retiring legend Tim Cahill out on the most glowing of notes. But it was Scottish-born winger Boyle, after setting foot on Australian soil for the first time in his life last week, who stole the show with two goals and an assist.
The signs were there, even before kick-off. Boyle belted out his new national anthem with perhaps more gusto than the rest of his teammates combined. Then he backed it up by putting himself at the heart of all the team's best moves.
It wasn't about Tim, so they tried to say, but it really was. Big smiles from the deadset champion of Australian football as the final whistle blows and a tear from his mum. No fairytale goal and a few more minutes than he expected after his Socceroos pals took care of the result early on.
We'll have full results and analysis right here soon and on smh.com.au/sport.

92' Nabbout hits post
By
Someone forget to give Nabbout the memo about Cahill and almost deftly turns the ball in off the far upright. Lebanon race up the other end with a minute to play and earn a free-kick on the edge of the box. Cahill's in the wall. Can't score from there...

90' Cahill quiet, streaker
By
Cahill goes looking for a touch from the back four but coasts straight back to the middle of the box - where he belongs frankly. There's only one plan now. Get ball onto that bloke's head.
As Cahill gestures at his wrist to the referee before a streaker comes on in search of some Cahill love but only gets hugs from security.

87' Cahill goes close...
By
... to the ball getting close to him in the box. The slightest of touches from the defeder denies a Leckie cross from reaching the ever-reliable head of Cahill for the inevitable goal. The corner flags are quivering.
Ismail off and Chaito on for Lebanon.

85' Two chances for Cedars
By
Vukuvic tested by a dangerous Lebanon free-kick from the right. Any slight touch would have been a goal and he was unsighted but he's up to it.
Moments later, Maatouk is flying down the left - looked offside on first look - but he opened up too wide for the acute-angled one-on-one and fired across the face of goal.
It's as if the Aussies were distracted by something. Trent Sainsbury finally makes way, for Jurman, and hands the captain's armband to Cahill.

82' Substitution: Cahill's express appearance
By
He's on. The crowd errupts. All on their feet. It's Mooy who makes way.

80' Cahill steals the show - not on yet
By
Arnold actually speaks to Cahill, points with intent. The crowd should have been watching another Grant surge down the right that almost led to a fourth goal. Cahill hugs everyone on the bench as Mooy crunches a shot into an unfortunate Lebanon defender. How long can Lebanon keep the ball in to deny the change?

75' Cahill warms up...
By
He is 38, so may need a bit longer to warm up, but this is for the crowd I suspect. A half-hearted 'Cahill' chant goes up and he comes out of the dugout. Meanwhile, a game goes on with Lebanon attacking down the right - a man short on the counter again - and Nabbout skying a chance off-balance from a touch behind the penalty spot.

73' Substitutions: Everyone but Cahill
By
Amini makes was for James Jeggo, who finally gets his Australian debut. He'll likely remember it for the massive cheer that just went up for Tim Cahill, who playfully attended to his boots. Earlier, Nabbout took Juric's spot, while Jradi (who just got a silly yellow), makes way.
