Australia’s most famous round ball athlete has welcomed a son, Jagger.

“Our little man is here, Jagger Mewis-Kerr,” said Sam Kerr in a post shared to Instagram that also features partner Kristie Mewis, a footballer from the US. Mewis carried the boy to term.

“Welcome to the Tillies fam, Jagger!,” said the Matildas on social media platform X.

Mewis plays for West Ham United in the Women’s Super League.

She was part of the United States team that won bronze at the 2020 Olympics – beating Kerr’s Matildas in the playoff for third. She also won the CONCACAF Championship with the US in 2022.

The arrival of a child with such an athletic pedigree has already prompted some fans to start dreaming, tongue-in-cheek, about his future in sport.

Kerr, captain of the Matildas, has had an eventful few years.

After missing much of the Matildas’ fairytale 2023 World Cup campaign through injury, she returned in time to score an era-defining goal against England in the semi-final in Sydney. However, it was later reported that she had been charged with racially aggravated abuse against a police officer for calling him “stupid” and “white” in January of that year.

She was found not guilty in February of this year after a trial.

Kerr, a striker with Chelsea, has been recovering from an ACL injury sustained during a club training camp in Morocco in January last year.

This has kept her out of the Matildas for 18 months, a period that included the 2024 Paris Olympics, at which the Matildas failed to make it out of the group stage.

Her return to training with the Matildas in April provided evidence of her enduring star power: 2000 fans tried to get in.
