Full-time: 2-0 win in Newcastle seals clean sweep for Matildas

By Robert Dillon

The Matildas overcame a spirited South Korea – and some self-inflicted friendly fire – to complete a clean sweep of their two-match international friendly series with a 2-0 triumph in Newcastle on Monday night.

A bumper crowd of 28,019 was stunned into silence in the 33rd minute when Australian defender Alanna Kennedy and midfielder Tameka Yallop clashed heads in a high-speed collision.

Both players stayed down for treatment for several minutes, and Kennedy was sporting a massive shiner under her right eye when she finally regained her feet. But after heading to the sidelines for further assessment, both opted to play on, providing an inspirational boost for their teammates.

Ten minutes later, the Matildas opened the scoring when veteran midfielder Emily van Egmond dissected Korea’s defence with a sweet pass that Mary Fowler controlled and then banged into the net with a classy right-foot finish.

Job well done

Impressive second half overall from the Matildas. Some really sharp attacking play and they’ve been able to control the game quite well; I can’t think of too many moments in which the Koreans have troubled them at the other end. The addition of Torpey on the right wing has added some spark and a quick shoutout to Charli Grant, who has been terrific in both games at right-back filling in for the injured Ellie Carpenter. If they can see this out and keep another clean sheet, it’ll be exactly the kind of window they would have wanted going into these friendlies.

Super sub strikes for Matildas

By Vince Rugari

Instant impact for one of the latest substitutes for the Matildas, with Kaitlyn Torpey putting Australia 2-0 up after a wonderful cross from the left from Mary Fowler and three consecutive attempts by Caitlin Foord which were blocked, saved or off the woodwork, with the ball finally falling to Torpey - although her attempt was off target and went in off the foot of a South Korean defender. Two of the three goals the Matildas have scored in this window, then, came off the opposition.

Matildas double their lead!

Mary Fowler scored the first goal and has just created Australia’s second. Attacking down the left flank, she whipped in a cross to Caitlin Foord, who had three cracks at goal, one of which rebounded off the crossbar. Eventually the ball popped up opportunely for Kaitlyn Torpey, who buried it.

Kennedy clocks off

Coach Sermanni has made some changes, including replacing Alanna Kennedy, who might need to track down an icebag for her bruised face.

There’s one fresh face out there for the second half for Australia: Caitlin Foord has come on for Holly McNamara, replacing her at the point of the attack.
