Magnificent Hazard ends Liverpool's 100 per cent start

The brilliance of Chelsea's Eden Hazard ended Liverpool's 100 per cent start to the season as Maurizio Sarri's side enjoyed a 2-1 win at Anfield in the League Cup third round.

Liverpool have started with six consecutive wins in the Premier League and a victory in the Champions League, but have been knocked out of the League Cup thanks to a superb solo goal from Hazard in the 85th minute.

Daniel Sturridge had put Liverpool in front before Emerson levelled for Chelsea in the 79th minute, after Simon Mignolet parried a Ross Barkley header from a free-kick whipped in by Hazard.

The Belgian forward, a 56th-minute substitute, won the game with a devastating finish after a powerful run in from the flank, leaving two Liverpool defenders in his wake before firing into the far corner.

"I don't know, I need to watch it again, but for sure it's on top of the list also because it's Liverpool," Hazard told Sky Sports when asked to rate the strike.

"When I received the ball I just looked, I could see I was on my own, so I just tried to do what I can do.

"But I think the game on Saturday is going to be more important because of the win today and in the league they are also incredible.

"Let's hope for a good game on Saturday. Now we need to try and beat them on Saturday."

The two teams face each other again at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the Premier League.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp bemoaned Chelsea's equaliser, questioning VAR following the first goal.

"The first goal is offside. I don't think the ref has to see it (VAR). For me, three players are offside - two for sure, everybody can see that, and even Barkley, not a lot, but he's offside as well," he said.

"At the end they watched it and didn't think it was offside, so I have to take it.

"We had the chances to finish it ... and we could have done better but they scored twice, we scored once, that's the result."

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur needed penalties (4-2) to beat Watford after the teams ended 2-2.

West Ham United hammered fourth tier (League Two) Macclesfield Town 8-0 and Danny Welbeck scored twice as Arsenal beat Championship Brentford 3-1.
