ANALYSIS: Socceroos take another sure-footed step in the right direction
There was nothing particularly revelatory about the Socceroos’ 1-0 win over Canada, the seventh in a row under coach Tony Popovic, who remains undefeated in 11 games since taking over. It was more a case of further confirmation of the things that he, and the rest of us, already suspected.
For instance: there’s something special brewing between Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure, the pair who Australia’s attack is set to be shaped around in the coming years. We knew this. They showed us against New Zealand. But it was nice to see them do their thing against an even better opponent, creating what proved to be the decisive moment of Saturday morning’s (AEDT) match in Montreal from almost nothing.
Toure made a gut-busting run down the right but, without too many other options, floated a rather hopeful ball into the box. Canadian defender Niko Sigur thought he had it covered – but he didn’t spot Irankunda, creeping up on his blind side, who pinched the ball off him and prodded it home, entirely against the run of play.
Irankunda is best known for his freakish ball-striking, from both set pieces and long distance. But one of the most critical additions to his personal repertoire since he left the A-League has been his off-the-ball work, and his defensive harrying of opponents. This goal came directly from that under-appreciated quality.
MATCH REPORT: In-form Irankunda steers Socceroos past Canada
Teen sensation Nestory Irankunda has scored his second goal in two matches, while goalkeeper Paul Izzo starred to deliver the Socceroos a fiery 1-0 win over Canada.
Having already qualified for next year’s World Cup in North America, the Socceroos are ramping up their preparation with friendlies against hosts Canada and the United States, whom they play in Colorado on Wednesday.
After surviving a dour first half on Friday (local time) dominated by Canada, the Socceroos came to life with the introduction of second-half substitutes Jordy Bos, Lewis Miller and Patrick Yazbek, while Watford star Irankunda netted in the 71st minute.
Randers goalkeeper Izzo, who started ahead of captain Maty Ryan, made multiple saves, including a world-class effort to deny Jacob Shaffelburg in the 90th minute, to secure Australia’s seventh-straight win.
Toure: “We’re happy with the result and the clean sheet”
We’ve just heard from Mohamed Toure, who delivered the almost-assist for Nestory Irankunda’s goal. He spoke to Paramount Plus, and here’s some of what he had to say:
It was a very tough game. In the first half, it was difficult. We didn’t get much chances, the boys defended well … at the end of the day we didn’t concede, but it was very difficult. And then in the second half, we kind of got in more control of the game, and we had some big chances leading up to Nestor’s goal. We’re happy with the result, the clean sheet, and we won the game.
On the goal:
Connor [Metcalfe], he’s a magician. He sees everything, and when I ran down the line, he played me through. I crossed it in and Nestor was there to tap it in - I’m not sure if it’s an assist, but I’ll take it. It’s good to get goals like this as well, some of these scrappy goals too, it shows your hunger to score goals. I’m very proud of the kid for scoring.
That’s not a surprise. The boss always demands hard work and dedication, and he’s always on our on our side to back us, but he wants us to work very hard on and off the pitch. You can see in the results that what he’s doing is working.
The full-time stats tell the story
Lots of saves at one end, and one key moment at the other that decided things.
FULL-TIME: Canada 0-1 Australia
And after some utter madness in the final minutes - a frantic scramble in Canada’s attacking box, which saw the ball bounce off the woodwork, amid more strong goalkeeping from the unbeatable Paul Izzo - the whistle goes.
Australia wins 1-0, and Tony Popovic remains unbeaten as coach after 11 games. That’s their seventh win in a row, too. Amazing stuff.
That’s a really strong, gritty and overall impressive victory by the Socceroos. They were nowhere near it in the first half but recovered really well after half-time. Nestory Irankunda’s goal proved the difference, but Paul Izzo’s saves were just as crucial.
Irankunda cops a yellow – then gets hooked
Another free kick for Canada – Aiden O’Neill sees a yellow card amid a scuffle after it. And another header on target, and another save by Paul Izzo. He’s killing it.
Meanwhile, Nestory Irankunda is well and truly under the Socceroos’ skin. He side-footed the ball away as the referee blew for a foul for Canada, and one of their players came right up to him, shoving him and yelling at him. Silly areas. Irankunda reacts, and gets a yellow card – and Tony Popovic, who tried to calm him down, decides to immediately take him out of the game and replace him with Daniel Arzani. Good decision.
And now … Izzo denies Promise David. Another cracking save. Wow.
The Socceroos are almost home!

Izzo to the rescue!
A shot from outside the box from Choiniere, one of the Canadian substitutes… it deflects off someone, but Paul Izzo is equal to the task and collects the bouncing ball.
And he delivers again! Izzo, what a save to deny Shaffelberg! Lewis Miller switched off and Shaffelberg snuck in, stole the ball and really should have put away that cross from the right. Somehow, Izzo denied that from happening. A really brave, smart save.
We’re about to enter five minutes of added time. Can the Socceroos hold on?
Canada 0-1 Australia, 90 minutes
Irankunda is annoying them. In a good way
Free kick, very near the left corner flag, for Australia - drawn by Irankunda, who was under pressure from three Canadian defenders. They know the threat he can pose now!
Irankunda will take the set piece, too, and don’t rule out a shot from him. Even from this ridiculous angle. He delivers ... and the goalkeeper thumps it away. Canada safe, for now, but the Socceroos win it back, and Bos can cross it in ... but he can’t quite find Martin Boyle, who was lurking in there unmarked.
More good signs for Australia.
Canada 0-1 Australia, 87 minutes
On comes Martin Boyle
The Socceroos look comfortable. I hope what I’ve just said doesn’t curse them, but honestly, since the goal, they’ve handled whatever Canada has thrown at them with aplomb.
Here’s some more fresh legs coming on to help them see this out: Connor Metcalfe is off, and Martin Boyle is on. So there’s a couple of veterans on the ground, now, who really need to put their best foot forward to show Tony Popovic they still deserve to be though of as serious cogs for the Socceroos, because there’s a lot of selection pressure building ahead of the World Cup.
