ANALYSIS: Socceroos trumped in the USA, but they’re heading in the right direction

By Vince Rugari

The streak is over, but the optimism remains. For the first time under Tony Popovic, the Socceroos have had their colours lowered. Though the 2-1 defeat to the United States will sting, more crucial steps forward were taken by his ever-evolving team.

A sensational individual effort from Jordan Bos was cancelled out by a pair of strikes from Coventry City’s Haji Wright, either side of half-time on Wednesday (AEDT), bringing to an end Australia’s seven-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten run under Popovic.

The good news, if you can call it that, is that both goals conceded were preventable. It wasn’t as if the USA carved them open at will. They were the result of momentary switch-offs, the likes of which the Socceroos rarely have under Popovic – particularly the second, which came after a contentious free kick was taken quickly, catching their defence on the hop, just seven minutes after half-time.

And while they couldn’t find an equaliser, the search was conducted in an encouraging manner. In the second half, they generated eight shots to the USA’s four; with some better finishing, a draw or better was eminently possible.

All in all, not a bad effort for a group still coming to terms with the demands of not only international football, but Popovic’s elite demands – and against a side ranked No.16 in the world, featuring many players seeing regular minutes at top European clubs.

“In terms of the result, it’s not what we wanted,” said skipper Maty Ryan. “But within the performance, there was lots of positives to take – and the boss wanted to make sure that that message was clear also.”

This is an Australian side with a level of attacking weaponry unseen since the days of the golden generation. The sheer dynamism of bustling wing-back Bos, who created his 19th-minute goal from basically nothing, and the electricity of Nestory Irankunda, a second-half substitute, will be a handful for any opposition trying to contain them on the counter-attack.

The way Popovic’s attacking players executed their high press troubled the Americans – but, in turn, his players, particularly the younger ones, were troubled by the high-altitude conditions, which left them gasping for air and unable to repeat their efforts as they ordinarily would.

For a beaten manager, Popovic was upbeat in his post-match press conference, describing the performance as better than the one that delivered victory over Canada at the weekend, coming against an even better side.

With only four days to acclimatise to the conditions after travelling from Montreal, the experience will hold them in good stead should they be exposed to the same thing in 2026.

“Really good learning curve for us,” Popovic said.

“We’ve learned that we will be competitive, and we can compete. We went out there with a real positive mindset, and I thought the players showed a lot of bravery, and they were really courageous at times on the ball to try and play through them and created some good moments.”

Elsewhere, this window marked the discovery of another strong World Cup option in Jacob Italiano, the Austria-based right-back who was a late inclusion in Popovic’s squad but started both games, and more than held his own.

“Hopefully there’s a lot more to come,” Popovic said.

Nick D’Agostino, who has struggled for game time with his club in Norway, also threw himself about up front in his usual battering ram style. Mohamed Toure is the clubhouse leader as the Socceroos’ top striker, but the race to be his back-up is hotting up, putting pressure on veteran Mitch Duke, who came on late for his 50th cap, but too late to affect the game.

The Socceroos don’t yet have opponents lined up for next month’s window, the final one of 2026. A trip to India to face Argentina – and, according to reports, perhaps even Iran, for the first time since that game in 1997 – is a possibility, albeit one that depends on the third-party promoters trying to make it happen. A return home is another option.

Wins are critical to boost Australia’s chances of sneaking into pot two and potentially securing a more favourable draw for the World Cup. But Popovic has no interest in sacrificing the sort of preparation he wants for his team for the sake of chasing ranking points, and signalled match announcements would be made next week.

“That’s not our focus,” he said. “Our focus is being tested and challenged.”

Following that, the Socceroos have only one more opportunity, in March, to try things out before their pre-World Cup camp and the unveiling of Popovic’s squad for the tournament.

There are still plenty of questions to be answered, but the plan is coming together.

MATCH REPORT: Wright’s double act puts Socceroos to the sword

By AAP

The Socceroos have suffered their first defeat under coach Tony Popovic, slipping to a 2-1 loss to World Cup hosts the United States.

A wonderful solo goal from the sensational Jordy Bos gave Australia the lead in the 19th minute, before Haji Wright equalised 14 minutes later.

Wright added a second in the 51st minute to steer the world No.16 US, led by Mauricio Pochettino, to victory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado.

The Socceroos were unbeaten in their previous 11 games under Popovic, and on a seven-game winning run, and would have been disappointed with their defensive lapses.

But they will take plenty from a window that serves as crucial preparation for next year’s World Cup finals in North America.

Popovic made five changes to the team that beat Canada 1-0, headlined by skipper Maty Ryan replacing Paul Izzo in goals.

Bos, Martin Boyle, Jason Geria and Nick D’Agostino started, with Nestory Irankunda, Mohamed Toure, Milos Degenek and Kye Rowles benched.

The US dominated possession, with the Socceroos midfield struggling to keep a foot on the ball.

Australia scored after James Sands attempted to block a Bos throw-in but the ball skewed off his boot.

Feyenoord gun Bos rushed in to meet it, took a lovely first touch with his chest, then danced around three US defenders, before scoring with a terrific whipped left-footed finish.

Geria was booked for bringing down Christian Pulisic on a counterattack in the 27th minute, with the US skipper forced off minutes later.

The US broke through when the Socceroos lost possession, with Weston McKennie finding Cristian Roldan and the midfielder slipped through Wright to score at the near post.

Six minutes later, Roldan dragged a shot just wide of the far post, and Wright headed a corner over the bar in the 38th minute.

The final minutes of the first half descended into spotfires.

The Socceroos should have restored their lead a minute into the second half after another scything Bos run, only for Connor Metcalfe to have his shot blocked.

The US made Australia pay, taking a quick free kick, with Roldan releasing Wright with a long ball. The Coventry City striker turned Cameron Burgess inside out before coolly finishing past Ryan.

Australia dominated after the goal and Popovic turned to Toure, Irankunda, Ajdin Hrustic and Patrick Yazbek off the bench to add energy.

Bos went on a wonderful run in the 75th minute but was closed down, before Ryan made a big save to deny Diego Luna in the 79th minute

Irankunda dazzled with an enchanting run in the 89th minute but was denied by Matt Freese, and Australia couldn’t find an equaliser.

The Socceroos will return to action in the November window, before the World Cup draw on December 5.

FULL-TIME: United States 2-1 Australia

And that does it. The referee blows the whistle after just four minutes of added time. Weird.

But that means the end of Australia’s 11-match unbeaten streak under Tony Popovic, who tastes defeat for the first time as national team boss.

The result is disappointing but the performance, particularly in the second half, was pretty encouraging. Jordan Bos was the standout player, and of course scored that first-half goal, but there were some great contributions from plenty of others.

Five minutes of stoppage time to come

By

Corner for the USA. Luna sends it in… no target found, but they keep the ball alive.

We’re into what will be, at least, five minutes of stoppage time.

Phew… Morris, the substitute, fires a shot past the post. Let-off for Australia. This game is really open now.

Mitch Duke comes on

By

...for Jason Geria. An interesting move, because that means the Socceroos will run a different formation for the final minutes. Experimental from Popovic with his final substitution.

And there goes a ripping chance for the Socceroos - and it’s that man, Irankunda, who dribbles, skips past two defenders, finds room to shoot around a third, and then shoots… but Freese saves. Big shame.

Bos and Freeman collide

By

Heavy collision between Jordan Bos and Alex Freeman. Both players are down. Bos is receving treatment in the head/neck region, which is a concern, while Freeman seems to have a knee problem?

Bos is sitting up. That’s good news. He looks OK, albeit a little dazed. Same with Freeman.

If Bos can’t complete the match – no need to take any risks, here – the obvious replacement on the bench is Kye Rowles.

Actually, it looks like both players will see out the match. So there you go.

Ryan saves!

By

Woof. I jinxed that… the Americans almost had a third goal through Diego Luna, who received a clever pass on the six-yard box - and only a smothering intervention from Maty Ryan kept that from going in and sealing the result.

The Socceroos are yet to find a situation where they’ve been able to get Irankunda loose and into space. That needs to be the priority right now.

And Luna - again! Another shot from the edge of the box, and he pulls it just wide.

Italiano comes off as Miller gives Socceroos fresh legs for the finish

By

And now the Socceroos have turned to the bench for the penultimate time in Denver - off comes Jacob Italiano, who’s been great at right full-back. Lewis Miller, the regular in that position, comes on to give the Socceroos some fresh legs out wide.

Here’s a free kick for Australia. Taken by Ajdin Hrustic, and Circati gets his head on it - his attempt is on target, but it’s a little weak, and the goalkeeper scoops it up.

Been a while since we’ve seen a real attack from the USA.

Bos almost bustles his way into the box

By

Almost something there from Jordan Bos, who charged through the middle of the park on a super run, made it to the edge of the box and then lost the ball under pressure amid a crowd of bodies. There was a hint of a possible foul there, but only a hint.

Meanwhile, another two subs for the USA - Cristian Roldan and Weston McKennie are off, and Aidan Morris and Max Arfsten come on.

Time is ticking for the Socceroos.
