Neymar is roasted on social media after epic World Cup dive

If you were scrolling through Twitter towards the end of the Brazil v Costa Rica game, you would have been forgiven for wondering why people were talking about aquatic sports - but no, it wasn't that kind of diving.

After Brazil's Neymar took a spectacularly languid fall in the penalty area, social media users wasted no time in pointing out how unconvincing it was.

Many labelled him a diver, criticising his disingenuous fall, while others called for a yellow card or posted GIFs of other things succumbing to the force of gravity.

"Twitter can't stand Neymar," one user wrote. "Although to be fair he seems to struggle to stand himself."

The referee initially granted a penalty to Brazil. But, after consulting the Video Assistant Referee system, known as VAR, he reversed the decision.

Brazil finished with a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica, with a goal from Philippe Coutinho in the 90th minute and another from Neymar in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Brazil's head coach Tite didn't escape the Twitter treatment either. After being knocked to the ground by over-zealous players celebrating the win, spectators drew swift comparisons to his striker.
