Chris Roots: Owner Patrick Hogan believes Precedence could be back next year to be Bart Cummings' 90th Melbourne Cup runner after his slashing sixth in a fourth appearance in the Cup.
Bart watched from the committee room as Protectionist blitzed his rivals, while Precedence finished strongly from well back.
"There is no other race in the world that you are punching the air when you run sixth," co-trainer James Cummings said.
"Bart is satisfied with him and we are proud that he keeps coming back, the old warhorse he is."
The winner ran past 10 horses to take the Melbourne Cup for Germany in the final 400 metres, and Precedence went past nine with his late charge.
