Chris Roots: Owner Patrick Hogan believes Precedence could be back next year to be Bart Cummings' 90th Melbourne Cup runner after his slashing sixth in a fourth appearance in the Cup.

Bart watched from the committee room as Protectionist blitzed his rivals, while Precedence finished strongly from well back.

"There is no other race in the world that you are punching the air when you run sixth," co-trainer James Cummings said.

On Twitter, Admire Rakti's death appears to have overshadowed Protectionist's win. While tweets mentioning Protectionist spiked as the German crossed the finish line, once news of Admire Rakti's death broke soon overtook Melbourne Cup discussion on Twitter.
