On the day overall: I can’t even remember what I won on first....it was good to have two winners on the board. So full of confidence heading into Tentyris. And I thought he was my best ride today. He’s just improved and improved and won the big one, you start to think, can I do it again? And yeah. And then Observer just led all the way. So yeah. Fantastic day.

On the reactions from his wife: I just tell her [wife Elyse] I’ll meet you in the yard after. Just keep a lid on it. But she’s pretty fired up about today. I’ve told her it’s day one for the carnival, so we’ve just got relax, get through the rest of the week first.

On his daughter’s reaction: She asked if I had a winner or not, but she’d rather watch Gabby’s Dollhouse than the races at the moment. She does like when I bring her home a trophy. So I’ve got a few to a few to hand over for her tonight.

People love a dress code. “It makes things easier,” says stylist Lana Wilkinson about the tradition of wearing black and white to Derby Day, the first race meeting of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Here are the people who cracked the code.

Zahra’s dream Derby Day

By Andrew Wu and Danny Russell

Mark Zahra’s wife Elyse had planned to have a quiet Saturday night, but those plans were out the window after her husband’s Derby Day demolition at Flemington.

Zahra banked at least a cool $144,000 – plus bonuses – for just over seven minutes in the saddle during a stunning two hours where he rode four winners in a row. His haul included victories in the feature Victoria Derby and the Coolmore Stud Stakes aboard Godolphin colts Observer and Tentyris respectively.

And it took a brilliant, trademark all-the-way win by the people’s favourite Pride Of Jenni in the Empire Rose Stakes to snap Zahra’s winning streak.

“What a day,” Zahra, the third jockey to ride four winners on Derby Day, said.

Tessa James’s Summer Hey

By Damien Woolnough

Actress Tessa James struggles to remember her first outfit that she wore to the races.

“It would have been something from when I was on Home & Away,” James says, hopping from the Crown to the Lexus marquee like a Birdcage pro.

When asked if her style had evolved, James could barely conceal a smirk.

“Most definitely.”

Frisky fashions on the field

By Damien Woolnough

Student fashion designer Ella Atkins may be the first contestant in history to bring sex toys to the Fashions on the Field stage.

Atkins missed out on the top prize but scored her own win by challenging convention with a voluminous ballgown printed with sex toys, paired with a crown of devices that had the judging panel crossing their legs. I can confirm this as I was one of them.

“Each of my works is about taking iconic silhouettes from history and giving them a daring twist,” Atkins says. “With the leopard print and the placement prints, it’s about making more of a statement.”

So was Atkins surprised that the provocative pieces slipped through the initial judging phases and amde their way to the finals?

‘I found this hat in a pile of junk on the street’: Dimitriades is timeless

By Nell Geraets

Who needs couture when you can just find your headwear on the street? That’s what Alex Dimitriades, star of the 1994 teen drama Heartbreak High, did.

No, seriously, he picked up his grey flat-brimmed fedora while walking down the road three or four years ago, and has gotten great use out of it since.

Speaking of getting good use out of pieces, nothing Dimitriades is wearing today is new.

His two-toned loafers are 2000s “vintage” Gucci, his cream trousers are a Marc Jacobs purchase from 20 years ago, and the flower in his pocket was plucked from one of Flemington’s rose bushes.
