Panthers star Cleary caught flouting social distancing protocol

The NRL has handed Nathan Cleary a $10,000 fine after he was caught flouting social distancing protocol.

Pictures have emerged of the NSW Blues halfback getting close to a group of female friends on ANZAC Day.

The Penrith Panthers star has apologised to his teammates but has now been fined $10,000 - 60 per cent of which is suspended - and given a one game suspended suspension.

NSW police will now consider fining the star playmaker, too.

Cleary is the third star in the past 48 hours to have been caught ignoring social distancing protocol.

"Penrith Panthers acknowledges the photos of Nathan Cleary being shared by the media in regards to social distancing regulations," a Panthers statement read.

"The club was first made aware of the photos on Tuesday morning and immediately forwarded them to the NRL.

"The matter is now in the hands of the NRL and the club will be making no further comment at this time."
