Broncos serve up big second half to stun Storm – again

By Melissa Woods

Brisbane have inflicted another second-half nightmare on the Storm, roaring back to win their grand final replay 18-14 in Melbourne to secure their first points of the NRL season.

Just like last year’s title decider when the Broncos trailed by 10 points before over-running the Storm for a 26-22 victory, Brisbane turned their Friday-night match at AAMI Park on its head after half-time.

Coming out for the second half, the Broncos were down 14-0 and completing at just 55 per cent, and looked headed for a third successive loss to open the season.

But second-rower Jordan Riki scored twice in 10 minutes and then Kotoni Staggs burst through to score in the 58th minute to put his side in front for the first time, with Reece Walsh adding the extras for a 18-14 buffer.

It was the Broncos’ first win in Melbourne since 2016.

Brisbane’s defence, which had conceded 66 points in their opening two rounds, also found some steel as they foiled Melbourne’s desperate attempts to wrest back control.

The Storm had multiple chances to score but couldn’t put the finishing touches on their attack.

They had no such trouble in the first half when they completed at 88 per cent, continuing their impressive form in their previously unbeaten start to the season.

Sua Fa’alogo, who bagged a hat-trick last round, was first to cross for the home side, with the fullback running on to a pass from Joe Chan.

Second-rower Chan also got in on the try-scoring when Jahrome Hughes stood in a tackle and offloaded to his teammate right on half-time.

Brisbane’s only concern for the night was when Walsh was put on report late in the first half for an alleged high tackle on Cameron Munster.

Grant frustrated with rapid ruck rules as Broncos kickstart their season

By

“It feels like you’re playing touch footy out there at times. The refs are just doing what they’re told, but it is a bit frustrating at times,” beaten Storm captain Harry Grant tells Brad Fittler on Nine. Grant is obviously annoyed to have lost that game but also not thrilled with the focus on super fast ruck speeds this season.

But kudos to the Broncos who were staring down the barrell of a 0-3 start to the season if they went down tonight, as many had predicted. Encouraging for Michael Maguire will be the fact they didn’t rely on Reece Walsh pyrotechnics for tonight’s comeback, instead showing plenty of fight in defence for the majority of the contest.

Comeback kings Brisbane pull off another boilover to sink Storm

Mayhem on the final tackle as a Storm high ball is tapped back 20 metres, the Broncos defence is all over the place, Sua Fa’alogo runs clear but his feet are taken out from under him as he attempts another kick and that’s the ball game.

A real game of two halves – all Melbourne in the first half, all Brisbane in the next 20 minutes, and then the Broncos did very well to hold out waves of Storm attack in the final quarter of the match.

Staggs on report as Leo sidelined

Brilliant stuff from the Storm who run it on the last, Cameron Munster and Jahrome Hughes combining to open the Brisbane defence up through the middle, but Munster’s kick for Will Warbrick is too big and the ball trickles over the sideline.

A set later Kotoni Staggs is put on report for a shoulder to the head of Moses Leo, with the young Storm centre left a little dazed and eventually leaving the field, replaced by a fresh Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown. The penalty sends Melbourne into the Broncos’ territory again with just over three minutes on the clock.

Melbourne runs it on the last through Munster but he can’t break through, wrapped up five metres short of the line.

More Storm chances but Broncos defence hanging on

Another half chance for Melbourne ends with Nick Meaney being carried over the left sideline by four Brisbane defenders. Then the Storm go high with a Jahrome Hughes bomb but Jack Howarth and Harry Grant can’t bring it down cleanly.

Sua Fa’alogo still looks fresh as a daisy and is flying back with his kick returns but fatigue appears to be taking its toll on everyone else, and the Broncos are doing their best to hang on to what could be a crucial win for their campaign.

Storm denied by forward pass as game enters crunch time

The Storm go left and Nick Meaney looks set to score for all money but the referee spots a forward pass to the winger from Moses Leo. Melbourne’s next raid ends with a bomb to Will Warbrick, who brings it down but is immediately wrapped up by his opposite number Josiah Karapani.

Suddenly Melbourne are the desperate team in this one, but they’re still throwing plenty at the Broncos and there’s more than enough time to swing this game again.

TRY: Hunt, Staggs combine to put Brisbane in front

Ben Hunt is back into the halfback role tonight in place of the injured Adam Reynolds and he’s been very good in this second half, now popping a perfectly timed short ball for a charging Kotoni Staggs who brushes past Cameron Munster and splits the defence to score behind the posts.

It’s yet another big comeback from the team that made a habit of it at the business end of last season. This could be a massive scalp for Brisbane who are pretty desperate after dropping their first two matches of 2026.

But don’t write off the Storm just yet.

TRY: Riki at the double as Broncos close gap to two

By

We’re into the final half hour now and the game has gone back to a grind, which suits Brisbane’s after Melbourne’s long periods of dominance in the first half.

And it’s the Broncos who strike next, Jordan Riki finding himself on the right wing as Ben Hunt goes to the short side and finds Kotoni Staggs who sends Riki over.

Once again the Broncos are staging a comeback – they must love those 14-point deficits. Walsh absolutely nails the sideline conversion and now there’s just two points in it.
