Holmes faces nervous Origin wait after hip-drop tackle

By Christian Nicolussi

Queensland will be sweating on the availability of Valentine Holmes after he was placed on report for a hip-drop tackle on Wests Tigers back-rower Isaiah Papali’i in Townsville on Friday night.

Holmes was sin-binned just before half-time after he came down on Papali’i’s ankle, with the Penrith-bound forward forced out of the game.

The Maroons regular does not have the cleanest disciplinary record, which will not help his case as he tries to avoid suspension for the June 5 Origin opener against NSW. He was hit with a four-match ban for a tackle on Jayden Campbell late last season.

Cowboys coach Todd Payten did not hold back after the game.

Full-time: Cowboys 42 Tigers 28

That’s harsh on the Tigers. After a long break by Tom Dearden before he’s brought down inside the Tigers’ 10m line, the Cowboys spin the ball out to Val Holmes on the left wing and he runs around to score under the posts.

That’s the final play of a high-scoring Friday evening game in Townsville. After the Cowboys’ three-try blitz to open the game, the Tigers were back in it, before the Cowboys shifted momentum again.

Try: Twal scores!

The Tigers are playing right to the end despite the scoreboard, while the Cowboys have really dropped off in the final five minutes. Alex Twal gets on the end of a bomb that the Cowboys can’t deal with and he’s over. Ten points the difference with two minutes left.

Try: Utoikamanu barges over late for Tigers

Stefano Utoikamanu picks up the ball from dummy-half a few metres out from the Cowboys’ line and he shows great strength to power through three defenders to score. Nothing more than a consolation try but after their shocking opening 20 minutes, they’ve shown plenty of fight.

Try: Nanai gets a second

That should settle it for the Cowboys. Chad Townsend puts a nice pass right on the chest of a rampaging Jeremiah Nanai, who barges over carrying a couple of Tigers defenders. With less than six minutes to go, the Tigers look gassed after working so hard to get back into the game after that early Cowboys’ blitz.

Try: Holmes strolls over

The Tiger’s right edge defence collapses under some pretty relentless pressure from the Cowboys. Val Holmes takes a flat pass about 10m out from the Tigers’ try-line and he runs around under the posts untouched. T

Try: Cowboys re-establish lead

Just when it looked like the Tigers were in the ascendancy, their middle defence parts like the Red Sea and Sam McIntyre runs through untouched to score under the posts. The game looked to be there for the taking for either side - that try feels like it will be crucial.

Feldt blows hat-trick chance

By

Kyle Feldt looks for all money that he’s about to score his third try of the night, but drops it as he’s diving over. Lackie Galvin may have got the faintest of touches to brush it out of his hands. And Val Homes is back from the sin bin.
