Tigers dodge wooden spoon with Galvin grudge match boilover

By Robert Dillon

Wests Tigers 28, Canterbury 14

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall insisted “it was never about him” after his team’s 28-14 boilover victory against Lachlan Galvin’s Canterbury at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

Galvin, the 20-year-old halfback, was playing against the Tigers for the first time since his much-publicised mid-season transfer to the Bulldogs.

He was booed by the vocal crowd every time he touched the ball and received a verbal spray from Tigers skipper Jarome Luai after conceding an early penalty.

Marshall said afterwards the issue had been overblown, and the Tigers’ only focus was on making sure they won the game against a high-flying opponent.

Full-time: Tigers boilover to keep wooden spoon at bay

Consolation try to Josh Curran with 90 seconds to go. It’s a good one too. Charge down with a couple of kicks, foot race with Adam Doueihi and mudslide. Curran gets the ball down but it matters nought.

This win for the Tigers lifts them above North Queensland - pending their result against Cronulla this afternoon - to 20 competition points, and to 12th on the ladder. The Dogs will stay in third place with a four-point lead on the Warriors.

The Tigers really should be clear of the wooden spoon equation now. What a time. Full time actually. Well deserved win and a sneaky jab from their social media team too - referencing Jarome Luai’s ‘team first’ post after the Galvin drama as they celebrate.

Try: Tigers nail the win with a forward pass

Another dubious ball, another Tigers try. They thoroughly deserve this win, don’t get me wrong. Clearly the better side.

But that ball for Samuela Fainu to cruise over from Jarome Luai was forward. Doesn’t matter though, refs have given it the green light. Doueihi converts. No comeback now for the Dogs.

65 min: Crichton is pinged for a high shot on Taylan May and Doueihi makes no mistake with the penalty goal. May has been ruled out of the rest of the game with concussion; Crichton very lucky to remain on the field. Tigers 22-8

Back underway at Commbank, still as soggy as ever. Canterbury giving the ball air despite the conditions and mud underfoot. Matt Burton makes a fair old break downfield. It ends in an error.
