Report: Olakau’atu blow rubs salt into Sea Eagles wounds

By Robert Dillon

Manly enforcer Haumole Olakau’atu is unlikely to play again this season after a disastrous return from injury in his team’s 42-4 hammering from Canterbury at Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

The NSW Origin and Tonga back-rower was playing his first game in six weeks, after initially dislocating his right shoulder in Manly’s round-15 loss to the Gold Coast.

On Sunday he stretched out to make a tackle early in the second half and immediately clutched at the same shoulder, in obvious pain. He was helped from the field soon afterwards by Manly’s medical staff and did not return.

With just six rounds left before the finals, Manly coach Anthony Seibold admitted Olakau’atu was in all likelihood gone for the season.

Try: Unheralded prop gets two for the day

By

Slammin’ Sam Hughes, he’s doubled his career try tally in roughly an hour. He scored the opener and is over again after crumbing from a cross-field kick that Ben Trbojevic couldn’t handle. It comes down to Connor Tracey, he dumps a pass to Hughes and he plunges over from close range. Love it.

Try: Tuala scores after Lodge goes on report

By

A big break from Connor Tracey as he returns a kick. Threatens to go all the way. Fantastic sight to see him flying away. Canterbury press Manly’s line and earn a penalty right in front. Late, high shot by Matt Lodge on Jaeman Salmon - those two were having words earlier. Lodge on report.

Soon enough Enari Tuala is diving over out wide. Easy as you like that one, another shift skins them down Manly’s right edge.

Drama for Turbo, and a move to fullback?

By

Drama for Tom Trbojevic as he goes down awkwardly in a tackle and is bent back. Concern around his knee but he’s up - gingerly - and back into it. We’ll keep an eye on that one.

Greg Alexander has already called for him to move back to fullback - I suspect next week might see that happen, as good as Lehi Hopoate has been, especially defensively.

Try: Xerri’s second as Dogs attack sizzles

By

Yep. Floodgates now open. And Tom Trboevic having a bit of a nightmare. Xerri brushes past him again, and shoves away from him when he comes again to score his second of the afternoon. Lovely ball movement from the Bulldogs throughout that play.

Manly’s defence in all sorts, but the offloading and passing from the likes of Max King and Viliame Kikau is impressive. A breakout game for the Bulldogs attack.

Try: Xerri strikes for a second try in five minutes

By

Manly in real danger now, Canterbury have their foot down and points are starting to come. That fluent attack is now in fine fettle. Bronson Xerri finishes this raid off.

Lachlan Galvin and Viliame Kikau feature heavily in the lead up to this one as the big Fijian shrugs off Daly Cherry-Evans and gets an offload away. It’s touched by Manly but lands with Xerri, he steps his way over from close range for the Bulldogs second try in five minutes.

Try: Kiraz gets a double

By

And despite a few errors creeping into their game after halftime, Canterbury click into gear once again down the right edge. Slick hands from Galvin and Crichton and Kiraz has his second try of the afternoon. Excellent break up the middle by Matt Burton set that raid up, he’s had another fine game. Crichton knocks over the conversion too. Long way back for Manly now.

No try: Hopoate saves Turbo’s blushes

By

And the Dogs are in again - pending a Bunker review. Can’t take that one off Connor Tracey… actually yes they can. His foot has slid into touch as he’s looked to slide over in defence.

That came after the unheralded fullback beat Tom Trbojevic all ends up - don’t see that very often. Lehi Hopoate saved his bacon with the cover tackle. He’s a fine defender already young Hopoate, punches well above his weight.
